M29 Weasel at Fort Eustis
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hello to all from Ft Eustis. I FINALLY am able to post some pictures on here from the items at the museum and from the surrounding area. This Weasel is located inside the museum, and was used for Arctic exploration. Notice the picture of the Weasel with the recoiless rifle mounted on it, I'd never seen that before. I have a number of items I will be posting here that are armor related or close to it. I will be posting some rather unique aircraft over at Officers Club, so make sure you go there to check them out as well. I'll be visiting the Virginia Military Museum Saturday the 8th, I'll be taking lots of pictures and recording all serial numbers and USA numbers I come across. I will keep you all posted as time allows.

Hi Jeff...
Well, don't be surprized..they probably even mounted a Davey Crockett on a Weasel at one time or other...think of it...an "atomic weasel". Mom would be so proud.

This is gonna' get Russ SO turned on...heck, he may have even served on a Weasel so equipped (or at least, fantasize that he had).

OTOH, I think he has bad dreams about an unfortunate weasel prank when we was a "wee laddie"...maybe we ought not to mention this thread to him... Wink

Jeff

Is that a Weasel used in Operation Deep Freeze?

The 1955 Joint Operation used Orange painted vehicles during the exploration of Antartica. The Weasel was widely used, as well as a single prototype, Rolling Eyes well, you can quess what !!

Excerpt from Task Force 43 (Operation Deep Freeze 1) Operations OrderThe Machines: For service, maintenance and operations:
(34) 20-ton cargo sleds;
(10) low ground pressure Caterpillar D8 tractors;
(3) low ground pressure D2 tractors;
(1) semi-low ground pressure Caterpillar D4 tractor w/ fork and bucket attachments;
(2) Pettibone-Mulliken carrylifts;
(5) M29C Cargo Carriers; (Weasels);
(2) Tucker Snow-Cats;
(1) ONTOS;
(1) Jeep
Several 1-ton M1 and "go-devil" bobsleds

Dontos, I figured this would draw your interest! Yes, this vehicle was used in operation "Deep Freeze". I just thought it would be the recoiless that would draw your attention. Too bad there isn't an Ontos here. When ever I find one, I'll take a bunch of photo's just for you.

Hey Jeff, I couldn't get you to send me a good photo of the front top fittings of that Weasel could I? I've got an old Monogram kit that is screaming for some detail in that area.

Also what are those attachment points for the front floatation cell (line of bolts?) just below his gloved hand?

Thanks

I was at the museum again today but didn't look at the Weasel closely. I'll see if I can get some close up shots the next time I'm their. Might be a week or so.

Sabot,
I didn't forget about your request. I'm going on post again today and I will pop into the museum and get some close-ups of the Weasel in the areas you mention. Sorry its taken so long.

Sabot, here are the pictures you asked for, as best as I could take them. I even tried to lean as far as possible over the exhibit wall to get an interior shot. Just under the gloved hand is indeed just a line of attachment bolts for the nose section. I know space is limited in a museum, but I sure wish they had it set up so you could look into the vehicle. Another annoyance I have with most museums I've visited is that while they may tell the unit / vehicle history, they seldom tell the reader the particular vehicles serial number, build date, USA number, etc... I plan to try and go back to the museum Monday at lunch time, and see if anyone there of importance knows and can give me a listing of all the vehicles they have by serial number. If you have any further requests, just shout.

I have no idea what "pranks" Doug refers to when I was a "wee laddie".

No Weasels were harmed in the alleged performance of such alleged "pranks".

Alleged structure to which such alleged "pranks" were allegedly applied no longer exists, so there, Mister Smarty Kibbey.

But you really had to allegedly have been there, man.

Not Russ

Not to worry, Russ...I think the statute of limitations on that gym floor has expired...probably by decades.
More worrisome is you being three weeks tardy to respond to this thread, let's try to pick up your cues faster, eh?

BTW, how's the eye?
