M1117 ASV article...
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Haw! It took awhile for me to spot... me... flattened under the M113 tracks. Well, I rightfully got what I deserved for using the G word.

Whew! For a while there I was thinking you were PO'd!

Hi Folks!

- mike_Duplessis

At the risk of (maybe) recycling old images, here's a little size comparison chart among modern transports. Remember - the 'littlest' vehicle pictured is a hummer, so that should tell you just how big the others are.
I honestly can't recall if I've posted this here before:

NO FAIR! Evil or Very Mad

If you are going to inflate the size of the Stryker by showing it with a bird cage, then you should also show the M113 with it's bird cage.

I don't think you have posted that comparision chart here. If you had, I somehow missed it.

This is the first time I really noticed the SIZE of the M1117. It's longer than a M113! I guess I must have been thinking about the old V-100s I had passed in Vietnam with my ACAV. I was thinking those were just a bit bigger that the M37 3/4 ton truck. Case of everything is bigger now days.

Question of the M1117 turret.
Is it manuel like the M113, put your weight into it to spin it?
Or is like the cuplo on a M48/M60 tank with a hand crank?

To Jeff, who didn't know we had this vehicle.

The M1117 ASV is one of those Cold War Legacy Programs that had just started when General Shinseki cut it off to provide funds for the new Stryker FOVs. Something like 90 vehicles had been completed and from what little was heard about those vehicles, it sounded a bit like the MPs where not even using them. Then the events of post "Major Combat" started up and leaders started seeing the M1117 not as a Legacy Cold War vehicle, but one that could be VERY usefull during the current type of activities.

Somewhere in all that, I think I am seeing 'the wheel being re-invented' or old lessons learned the hard way being relearned again and again the hard way.

My 2 cents on a few things, of which none have ever been known by the G name.

* (with a little help from his "friends").

Roy, I think the M1117 (ASV-150) actually is a bit longer than the old V-100 Commando was, but I was still surprized at the comparison with the M113.
Maybe we need one of those 6 roadwheel M113's up here with an ACAV kit, just for a more threatening profile...

I'd LOVE to be able to do comparison drawings of an M113 with its bird cage, but I've never actually SEEN one! I've heard the rumors that M113s were being upgraded for Iraq duty but no photos have surfaced. Same goes for Abrams with extra rear protection - saw a grainy photo of an Abrams with slat(?) rear end loaded on a railcar once but not one decent photo since then.

I've done scale plans of both the V-100 Commando and M1117 and believe me M1117 is a LOT chunkier. Like the V-100 after it got drafted into the Major Leagues and started bulking-up on steroids. Same can be said for Stryker & LAV too. These things are NOT Mini-Cooper size.

I found this photo at the Army Images site a few months ago. So far it is the only one I know of showing a M113 on patrol.

It does appear to me to be the same turret, with the modifications made for vision. Useing the same turret probably cuts down on the costs to keep it at the $700,000 price tag.
