Can You Fix This, Roy?
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hi Mark! Hi Folks!

I was an operator, but if you can arrange to ship it down here, I will give it a try. Do you have a LINGLE to set it back in when I am done?

Sorry for the slow responce. Was out of town with the wife over the weekend.

Sgt, Scouts Out!

For those of us that don't know, what are we looking at specifically?

Hi Roy. Don said this one is out of the one we were sitting on in a previous post.

Hi Jeff. This is the power pack out of an M114 series 'Command & Reconnaissance Carrier'. Affectionately known on the message board as the Sgt. Lingle. On the left of the picture you will see the fan belts. This was the front of the engine but in the vehicle it was mounted facing the rear. (Like M113's) On the right of the picture is the radiator. Underneath the radiator would be the automatic transmission. The 'white thingy' was called the 'steer gear' or geared steering unit'. It sat in front of the radiator and connected to the transmission. The axles would be inserted in the sides of it. Engine is a gasoline powered 283 cu inch V-8 Chevrolet engine. It had a 4-barrel carb but was only rated at 160HP.

A small block Chevy, we ought to be able to get some more horses out of that!!

The transmission wasn't a cousin of the old two speed Powerglide was it?

I always used to think the transmission in the M48A1 with it's simple high-low ranges and the Powerglide in my uncle's Belair came out of the same design family.

Very true, and I think there would be more than enough room for super upgrade!

One thing that surpised me was that small block Chevy engine along with the transmission in the M114 never lacked for speed. For a seven-eight ton vehicle, that pack could make that vehicle move a hole lot faster than it was safe to do.

But still, as Tim the Tool Man would say "MORE POWER"

Sgt, Scouts Out! Smile

Now the question is once we have the Lingle SS finished do we run it in the 'Late Model Sportsman' or the Demo Derby at the local short track?

Bob, I'm not sure if it was a 3 or 4 speed automatic but I figured it was off-the-shelf from GM. They could have cranked a lot more HP out of that engine. I used to have a '65 Nova with a 283 and 2-speed powerglide.

160 horsepower, but any idea about the torque? It might have been tuned more for low end grunt.

My father had a 1977 Impala with the 350ci (5.7 liter) V8 and 4-barrel carburettor. That was only rated for 170 HP and 270 pound/feet of torque. The engine was capable of a lot more than that, though. (Emissions control equipment, etc.)

The transmission (Hydramatic Model 305MC) had 4 ranges forward. Gross torque on the engine was 240 ft-lb@2800rpm.

I seem to remember photos of an experimental German PzKpfW III with a GM Hydramatic tranny, in WWII, but I can't remember where. Any help?

Boy that is an old picture! It is currently at Aberdeen in the 'tank park' behind the Museum. That photo looks like it was taken in another location entirely. That looks like one of the cut open panzers behind it ( I think the Pz III but I'm not sure)
