CH-54 Carrying a Sheridan
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hi Mark! Hi Folks!

Looks like an early version. Check out the gun barrel. Also the gun mount for the TC's machine gun is missing. My guess is that vehicle was stripped down to the basic vehicle. A second bird would be needed to bring in the crew, ammo and what ever else was taken off.

Speaking of CH-54s. I saw one two weeks ago today. It was setting at a small out of the way airfield along I-25, a few hours south of Albuquerque NM. Markings for a Heavy Lift Company. I think that is one of the few times I have layed eyes on one outside of Vietnam.

The Nevada National Guard used to have them in Reno. Don't know if they still do or not. Roy, could the one you saw have been supporting White Sands Missile Range?

I think the the Army retired (sold) all of them not long after the end of Vietnam.

It's possible, that airfield is not that far from the North West corner of the range area. I have no way of knowing for sure. It's was at a very small airfield. Single small hanger, wind sock, and no signs.

I don't think the Army (or any military) operats the type anymore. Erickson Aircrane seems to have acquired all the bits and rights and basically builds firefighting water bombers and probably some industrial lifters.

Last time I saw an ARMY CH54 was in the late 80's. It was moving some targets on the Nellis AFB (NV) range.
