Patton Museum Life of the Soldier Show
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Patton Museum exhibits will be manned by authentically uniformed interpreters this Saturday from 1000 to 1800 to answer visitor questions. Representing tank crewman from WWI thru the Cold War, the Patton Museum volunteer staff members manning the displays have actually driven and crewed some of the historic tanks on display. In addition, there will be displays of individual weapons and vehicle weapons to examine and examples of the main gun rounds used by the tanks. There will be an M4 Sherman tank demonstrated in Keyes Park behind the museum and a British Fox Armored Car will be on special exhibit in front of the museum.

Hey All

Just talked with a weary traveler, Doug is in the area!!

Friday: meet & greet @ 0900 Vic Patton Museum. We'll run around post and bug some of the 'locals' as well as taking in the sights. Hopefully the weather improves. (Thunderstorms, golfball sized Hail, & Tornado warnings tonight...)

Photos to be posted following each days 'activities'.

Annual Patton Museum holiday tradition changes

Memorial weekend ‘live’ combat switched to costumed interpreters

By C.J. GREGORY/Turret Staff Writer

A Memorial Day weekend event that had become a tradition on Fort Knox for the past several years will again take place this year.

Except not as people expected it.

The Patton Museum’s annual Memorial Day weekend live exhibition will not feature large-scale tank battles as in years past, said museum Director Frank Jardim, citing a lack of money to fund the event.

Jardim said the event will be held, just not on a grand scale.

“This year, unfortunately, we won’t be able to do the large scale tank battles we’ve done on previous Memorial Day weekends, due to funding restrictions, he said. “This year it will be in the museum, and be an intimate type of environment.

Beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, visitors will be treated to costumed interpreters throughout the museum who have been schooled to accurately represent the life of a U. S. Soldier from World Wars I and II, Vietnam, and the Cold War.

These are the same volunteers who would normally pilot the armored vehicles in the live combat demonstrations.

“It will have historical reenactors and museum staff costumed as tank crewmen from each period, he said.

Jardim added that there will not be any WWII veterans involved in the presentations, but visitors will gain lots of new information they may not have known before.

“There will be a lot to learn, he said, adding that the lack of a large-scale battle could still be beneficial.

“Often the crews are so busy preparing for the shows, they don’t have much of a chance to interact with the public, he said.

“There will be a lot of intimate time, and more involved (questions) and (answers), he added.

Each volunteer interpreter will demonstrate artifacts, small arms used aboard vehicles, as well as arms the Soldiers themselves would carry.

“There will be collections brought out for displays, Jardim said. “People will be able to pose for pictures with the interpreters and the vehicles.

Jardim said that although the event will focus mainly on U. S. Soldiers, a few other interpreters will be there to add to the event’s atmosphere.

“It’s mostly an American display, he said. “But in addition, German tankers will be here as well to talk about enemy equipment.

In addition, R. Lee Ermey, the host of Mail Call on the History Channel, will be at the museum sometime between mid-and-late afternoon Saturday, filming for an upcoming show.

Ermey, a former Marine, starred as the drill instructor in the movie, “Full Metal Jacket.

I assume that our local and travelling team of experts (as in 'been there, done that, don't tell me we didn't do ...') will be able to grade and correct any mistakes found in the 'interpretations'

As usual my busy life has kept me from thinking.

I should have let my Father know about this. He's right there in Louisville and finished out his time after at Fort Knox.

Is there an event scheduled for Memorial day that maybe he could make?
