The Russians were doing a lot of experimenting with airborne troop deployment in the interwar years but that basically went down the drain as Stalin felt a mobile military force and generals who could take the initiative would present an unacceptable threat to his dictatorship and most of them were shot or stripped of their rank, branded criminals and sent to concentration camps.
