Anti RPG Technology
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hi Mark! Hi Folks!

Sounds like a good system. However there maybe a cost vis effectiveness problem. I read the follow in the June issue of National Defense.

"Although most U.S. soldiers in Iraq ride in humvees, it is not likely that technologies such as Trophy will be installed in those trucks, said Chris Brown, director of strategic planning at General Dynamics. 'People are not going to buy a [system] that costs more than the vehicle itself,' he said."

The article also had the following data.

"The Iraq Index, compiled by the Brookings Institution, attributed 76 deaths to RPG attacks as of mid-April, which accounts for 3.6 percent of all fatalities suffered since 2003."

Type of vehicles, not recorded.

I for one, like the idea and hope it does work. Only time and money will tell.

Trophy would probably be best versus the BIG ATGMs or single shooter RPGs.

One would imagine there'd be a finite number of ATGMs being fired in your direction at any one time, which would make them a manageable threat. Longstanding (old Soviet) doctrine with RPG is salvo firing from multiple directions in order to maximize the (rather slim) chance of a hit at medium ranges. I don't know how Trophy would handle a barrage of 6-8 RPGs coming its way. The low-tech Slat cage seems to handle threats like that pretty well - better than expected, actually! And lets not forget RPGs have something like a 40-50% dud rate - at least that's what I hear. Trophy would be deploying against the duds as well as the good rounds, HE rounds as well as the HEAT rounds.

As to RPG's lethality in Iraq, IEDs have skewed the casualty statistics in recent years. I believe in the first year of the war, before use of IEDs became widespread, RPGs had accounted for something like half of the fatal casualties.
