Wrecks and relics in the USA
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

The side view of the Sherman tells me that it's ex-Israeli and that it started life as a M4A4. The circular discs on the hull rear are spare roadwheel holders and are typical of Israeli Shermans. Also, the engine deck splash guards for the deck access hatches are set farther back than would be seen on a M4/M4A1. Finally, just behind the engine deck splash guard is the exhaust outlet for the Cummins diesel engine. The 105 turret was probably added in the U.S.

Correct. this Sherman is a mix 'n match of Sherman tanks parts. I have been following it for the past few years. The hull is an ex-IDF M50, the turret with 105-mm gun was added in the US to make up a "complete" Sherman. This tank does not belong in a museum, it is a big boys toy.

The only thing I can come up with is the BVP-80 came over at the same time that the Kosovo refugees where at Fort Dix. I'll ask my friend if he can point me in the direction of who I can ask where the stuff came from.

Well, I certainly hope/dont think the refugees brought it with them!!

Neil

LOL Your right Neil, I just meant it might have been shipped over during the flights Wink

I got info on the equipment from the Fort Dix Museum curator

The T-72 we borrowed from the Marine Corps Museum. The Marine museum did not provide any further information.

The BTR-50 and the MT-LB came from the Property Book Office at Fort Devens, MA. The PBO at Devens wasn't sure where the vehicles came from or how they got to Devens.

The BVP-80 also came from Devens, but I was told it was a BMD.

It only belongs in a museum as an example of 'Never say never about Sherman variations'

Just based on what has shown up here and on the old board, that would be a fairly large museum!!

Maybe it is an idea to make a database with wrecks and relics. The site mentioned below has also several databases with info about military aircraft serials. Some are restricted to members only.

www.scramble.nl/databases.htm

In the past I used dBase IV for my aircraft databases, now I have a microsoft works database which in my opinion is not that good as dbase IV, but I don't see this program anymore. Probably to outdated......

Just a idea

Lesley

Lesley

I've been using MS Access for a data base I'm working on with all variants/versions of Ontos.

I modeled it after some Aircraft database listings I've seen on the web.

Although I'm sure I have some duplicate entries, I have been able to document the history of a number of vehicles. I make entries under hull SN, USMC #, bumper #, unit assigned, location, date and even crew members.

MS Works doesn't give me the function I like, so I figured out MS Access.

Just a thought,
Don

I've got an odd relic in an out-of-the-way spot. All the way up in Madawaska Maine (the tipy-top corner of the U.S.) outside a VFW post facing Canada across the river is the gun mount from an M15A1 AA halftrack! Its got the swivel base (still swivels), 37mm gun, mountings for the twin .50 cals (mgs missing). Halftack chassis is nowhere to be seen.

About 5 years ago I sweated blood researching drawings of the M15A1. Imagine my surprise when I recently learned the gun had been just sitting there fifteen mile above my old home town all this time!

Hi Mike
Can you get pictures of that M15A1 halftrack gun mount? I need some detail pictures to scratch build one of them.

1) Those were very nice M15A1 photos! That track is in pretty good shape.

2) To my earlier listing of tanks/artillery in Nebraska; add M60A3, Columbus, NE, at the American Legion post off Hwy 30.

Yeah, Fort Jackson seems to keep their small collection of vehicles in pretty good shape, or at least well painted. It probably helps that its the largest US Army basic training site - lots of available manpower for the latest paint update... Wink

Very good pictures, have to find a reason to visit. I was in Hawaii returning from Japan several years ago but they had sent their M15A1 to Ft Stewart to be refurbished. All that way and the only thing I could do was sit on the beach and and gaze... Cool

I got more information on the T-72 that has appeared at Fort Dix, from a very unlikely source..My mom was going though some old family photos from a trip up to the Intrepid museum up in NYC and there was photo of me in front of some tanks...and the same exact T-72 (going by the turret markings) was there!

Couple of additions ... I guess these are still there ... I haven't been there in some years.

Chuck Sherman writes:

"I'm here in Ft. Lewis, with the ROTC cadets. Busy, so I'm not on the boards at all. If anyone wonders, let them know I'll be back around in a month.

Found an M103 here, took pictures and got the SN. Found an two M60s, pics and SN. Several M4s of different models, pics and numbers (when I could find anything). Also ran across an M60A1 in backwater AZ on the way here, pics and SN, of course. Oh, and a M551 in good shape, parked for no apparent reason in a gravel lot. Pics and SN, naturally. All these (and more) are on post. I'm not done yet...spotted a Lingle this morning!

You can pass all that on, but let them know that it will be a while until I can get them up on the board. "

We'll look for those pics and numbers, Chuck!
