Wrecks and relics in the USA
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

BTW, I have taken up this project & started on it. Right now its a word document, I've tweaked Lesley's format a bit. Since its now in word format, I am including footnotes - lots of footnotes so far for the Ordnance Museum! I'll try to post a draft of the APG section as soon as I can.

Outstanding, Neil. When you get to a "finished" list (which, I understand, it will never actually be...) I'll have you start a thread that I'll make "sticky" at the top of our AFV page...the list will be amendable (by you) and I won't lock the thread so others can continue to post contributions/corrections/updates below the primary list and you can amend as necessary.

Will yours be just the U.S. list, or are you tackling the whole magilla?

Just US for now. So as to keep it in format, is there a away to upload the document itself? Rather than a copy & past which would remove the formatting & render the footnotes irrelevant...

I can ask admins if they'd load on the server so it could be downloaded...shouldn't take much space, but it's not my call. Won't that make it more difficult to amend as necessary, though? It'd require uploading a new one each time.

Alternatively, as the file is likely small, we could load on a little space on the server I share with some other members...it's slow for bigger files, but probably not this. I need to check with the bosses on this...gimme' a day or so....

A couple of suggestions, if I may.

Depends how you want the viewers of the document to be able to read it...Online or offline.

Online, you could do it as a web page, using css to get a standard format of the pages and each page could pull in it's own footnotes.

Offline, I would go for a database approach (access?) again each page would be a standard format with the ability to have linked footnote sections.

Personally, I would opt for what I think is the best of both worlds, using Macromedia's Flash program, you can either read the document online or choose to download it and read it. Flash also gives you the ability to add animation to the pages if needed, sound files and video's.

All the above would keep the document 'segmented' so that a change in a picture or a footnote would not mean having to reformat the whole document.

It really depends on how you want to use the file. If you want to view it online, you could put it up as HTML or PDF. Let me list some options.

If you or any member would like to be able to change or ediit it online, we can do a Wiki. Wiki's are designed for that. The drawback is, since anyone can edit the pages, it takes one malcontent to screw up the whole project. I'll have to check to see if permissions can be granted for certain groups or people.

Another drawback is the learning curve of Wiki. Syntax is a bit strange until you get the 'hang' of it. Also, putting all that content online is a ton of work until you get 'caught up'.

Another option. I could create a FTP folder on the FTP server for the AFV Admin. Since those folders are 'live' web folders, you'll be able to edit them at any time. As with any HTML or download zip file, any changes to the files require they be uploaded again to reflect the changes. This would enable you or the Admin(s) of your choice to link them as downloads either as single links or Com Central would be happy to start a new catagory in our download section. You could catagorize the individual files into smaller files and use the download section to show the different files.

CC would be happy to do whatever AFV needs to help them get this project underway.

I'm coming into this a little late but ...

I've had pretty good luck with 'Excel Databases' for info such as this

a simple spreadsheet with a column for each piece of information that I may want to sort on that way I can quickly reorganize the data to sort my currrent need. Excel allows simple sorts of three criteria and I've never needed to sort further than that to get a reasonable set of data pulled out.

Maybe it's a mental block but everytime I've started working with Access I've run into problems. Also I've found Excel to be much more widely available when I've shared info with others

Yeah, except I personally dont find Excell as easily readible as word. Its a good program for databases, but poor in terms of graphical user interface IMO.

At any rate, I am already well along with the word document, about 75% completed. If anyone wants to take it when its done and convert into a HTML, Flash or Excel format, great.

Neil, PM when you get done in whatever format you want and I'll convert it to HTML and uploaded to CC. Then we can work out the details of access after that so you or the person updating the file can keep it updated.

I don't disagree with those statements, but I'm a dinosaur who still has some information that was done on an ascii line printer with a bad ribbon that I can't seem to find the time to get back on a computer in any format.

Never disagree with the person actually doing the work (unless you are paying the bill)

I wouldn't mind getting a copy when you're done

Here is a list of tanks and artillery in Nebraska. This is not complete, but these have all been seen by me in person. I know the list has more than "tanks, but I record it all together.

Lincoln M60, M4A3E8, M59, M113

Gary, are any or all of these Lincoln vehicles part of the State Arsenal Military Museum?

Joe, can you send me or post whatever RNs you have, especially for Fort Knox? I think I have a lot of duplicate listings based on merging Lesley's original & yours. Any other RNs would be great too!

Correct. this Sherman is a mix 'n match of Sherman tanks parts. I have been following it for the past few years. The hull is an ex-IDF M50, the turret with 105-mm gun was added in the US to make up a "complete" Sherman. This tank does not belong in a museum, it is a big boys toy.

Hanno

Who/where does it belong to then?

Neil,
I wish I could help you but at that time I was at Knox I wasn't tracking Registration numbers, just serial numbers. The Marine Detachment M60A1 7109, USMC registration #399630, is not part of the Knox museum collection, it is also a runner. I know this because the number is painted on the side sponson boxes. Donto's might be able to help with the others. Sorry.
