Post subject: I had to do a Re-install FS9...HELP

That was not much of a problem, just take a deep breath and click on remove...........Then over to program files/Microsoft Games and delete all the fs9 related files.
Now I installed fs9 but of course I ran into a problem which I hope someone can help me with. I get this message which will not let me open FS9. I haven't even installed the Beech 18 so how can this come up... and most important how can I fix it.......AS ALWAYS YOUR HELP IS VERY MUCH APPRECIATED
Sorry the pic is so small but it says Aircraft initialization failure
Beech D18S VC N2913B

mmmmmmmmmmmmm, most of the time when it comes up with such a message it's down to :
a) a missing texture
b) a missing mdl file

if ya want we can go through it online on TS 1Bullit

Some additional advice based on my own experience of this....

1Bullet, what's happening there is not ALL files from your previous FS9 install are deleted when you uninstall FS9. In this case, your FS9.CFG file, whch is in a totally different directory, is still present and contains the default settins for your standard default flight setup from your previous installation (yes I like the Beech18 too!).

The answer is, you could install the Beech and fix the problem. But you'd also have other files or settings with dependencies on the old install.

You could also just go to the directory where FS9.CFG is located and delete that file - a new, standard default one with stock planes and settings will be created the next time you launch FS9, I believe.

That directory's location will depend on your user name in Windows XP but will basically be:

C:\Documents and Settings\(your_username)\Application Data\Microsoft\FS9

...you just may have to look in all user folders inside "C:\Documents and Settings" and the "Application Data" in each one to find the "Microsft" folder that has the "FS9" folder in it.....takes some searching but you'll find it.

It's good to know where FS9.CFG is so you can add some tweaks in there like double the number used for PAN_RATE to move your head around a bit faster in the virtual cockpit view...on my desktop, I have a folder with shortcuts to many common folders that FS9 uses so I can just go find them once, make a shortcut to them, and never have to go digging for them again.

rgr that Stoopy,

When doing a fresh fs9 install it's best to delete them files as well, didn't think of that straight away.

Right. There are really THREE folder areas that contain FS9 "stuff", and they are:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9
This is where the main program and all airplanes, scenery textures. modules, etc are. Good place to look at afer uninstalling FS9, and if you don't mind havng to reinstall EVERYthing, you could wipe out anything you find here.

C:\Documents and Settings\{Your_username}\Application Data\Microsoft\FS9
This is where FS9 config files and other odds and ends are kept, wiping this directory after an uninstall should prevent any config issues or initialzation problems like the above,

"My Documents" --> Flight Simulator Files
This is where flight plans and weather settings are kept. There really shouldn't be much in here that would cause a problem or need to be wiped between installs, so I really wouldn't touch it, because personally I have so many custom flight plans I like to keep, except if you were really seriously trying to yank every litle thing that had to do with FS9 you could erase this folder too.

It's good to have shortcuts to all three of these locations, plus other common locations in FS9 like the aircraft, gauges, effects and add-on scenery folders, inside a folder on the desktop, makes life easy.

One note not mentioned here that may cause confusion for more novice users is the fact that the "Application Data" folder is hidden. You'll need to enable this by opening any desktop folder, clicking Tools > Folder Options, and looking under the View tab. I keep my hidden files hidden for several reasons, but I do keep a shortcut to the Application Data\Microsoft\FS9 folder handy for fs9.cfg edits.

Glad you got it sorted Bullet... Wink

Tom, I do exactly the same thing. I have a folder on my desktop named "Games" where I keep all my game start shortcuts. (My grandkids love this, cause they can quickly see what new games Grandpa has..lol). In that folder is a subfolder called "FS9" and that's where I keep all the shortcuts related to the game including the FS9 config... Smile

Post subject: Re: I had to do a Re-install FS9...HELP

I have two FS folder shortcuts on my desktop - one for the FS9 root folder, and one for the folder I use to hold all my downloads. That allows me to do srtaight drag-drop operations in and out of FS. Inside that d/l's folder, I keep a shortcut to the App Data FS9 folder along with a direct shortcut to the fs9.cfg file. For minor edits, I just open the file, but for major experiments, I open the folder and make a backup copy first. I also keep a shortcut to the fs9.cfg in main FS root folder for added convenience.

As for the Sim itself, the main shortcut is on the Quick Launch bar, and for tweaking purposes, I keep a shortcut to the UI generated flight.flt on my desktop. That way, if I need to shut down the Sim to make an adjustment, I don't have to go through the flight setup menu again.
