Teaser #2 from Ft. Lewis
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

This sits outside what I believe used to be the 2nd ACR museum, before they re-flagged last month. It sits by itself in a parking lot behind the building, but it's in surprisingly good condition. The muzzle plug is welded in, but otherwise it looks pretty complete.

The commander's cupola, with the LRF at the front:

And the serial number, stamped into the front left edge of the hull:

Cheers,
C

So, the 2nd Cav is at Fort Lewis now? Not to be nit-picky but the number you photographed is the registration number. I didn't even know they stamped them on Sheridans Sad

Last thing I heard was that 2nd Cav was going to Vilseck, Germany to become a Stryker Brigade....

Hi Mark,

2nd ACR re-flagged to a brigade of the 3rd ID last month, if I heard it right. No unit moves, just a flag swap and an org change to the new BCT configuration. Later this year, the 2ACR will re-appear in Germany under the new BCT org chart. That may explain why the 2ACR "museum" is closed now, and this Sheridan is sitting alone in the lot behind the building.

At present there is no 3ID museum around here (maybe somewhere else, getting ready to move?), and the post museum hasn't caught up to the change yet.

An update: The Sheridan is gone! Keep your eyes open, it may be on a highway or appearing in a museum near you!

I'm glad I didn't wait to take my pictures...

To my knowledge the 3rd ID museum will remain at Ft Stewart where the division HQ is located, as is the bulk of the division. The museum is located in a small building not far from the main gate. Lots of nice stuff outside captured by the 24ID during ODS. Inside is a running T72 used by Steven Zaloga as the point of focus for the cover art of his Osprey T72 book. Neat story behind that tank and how it was captured.

The Sheridan pictured here is the same one I photographed a while back and I was told by the curator it was at one time a Vismod at the NTC. But there seems to be some question as to that by some knowledgeable people here for reasons I forget.

C Sherman, are you local? I'm from Portland and on occasion I visit Ft Lewis - Stryker heavan!

I suspect Chuck made a type-0 and should have said 2nd ID? Which is one of the two divisions with Strykers at Lewis.

Speaking of the cav, here is a pic of the US 7th's worst day. This was at the recent 130th anniversary of Little Bighorn. It was very well done, I thought. I love this digital age we are in. I must have taken 1,000 photos at two different re-enactments.

Anyway, sorry to go non-AFV here for a moment. Now we return you to your normal programming...

Hi all,

(Warning: The following is pretty much OT, so ignore it if you are offended by other-than-tanks talk!)

Funny you should mention the 7th. For the last 3 weeks and the next two, I'm a Garry Owen trooper!

I'm here at Ft. Lewis temporarily for Warrior Forge/Leadership Development and Assesment Camp (LDAC), which is the major assessment and training event for ROTC cadets across the US. It usually occurs between the cadet's junior and senior years in college, and by this time next year most of them will already be baby Lieutenants.

The ROTC cadets are organized into regiments here (6-8 platoons each). Each Regiment is paired or associated with a historic Army regimental lineage, and apparently this is officially sanctioned at fairly high levels. What makes your mention of the 7th funny is that the regiment I am here with is associated with the 7th. "Garry Owen" is our motto. (OK...it was funny to me.)

Irrelevant Factoids: Warrior Forge/LDAC is the single largest training event in TRADOC. Approximately 4300 cadets and roughly twice that number of support troops. Support is drawn from university cadre, USAR and ARNG troops on Annual Training, and dedicated support from an active duty brigade here at Ft. Lewis. Enormous resourcing for multiple training events including weapons qualification and familiarization, individual and small unit tactical training, squad and platoon lanes training, and lots of other stuff. Cadets are continously evaluated from the day they arrive, and as they rotate through various platoon- and company-level leadership positions. They are also evaluated in leadership positions on the squad and patrolling lanes. I should also mention that Ft. Lewis itself is incredibly supportive of the summer long activities (13 Regiments, starting every 4th day) that inevitably tax the posts resources and capacities.

Minimal Armor Content: Now, if I can just catch a Stryker or two outside of there fenced compounds, so I can take their pictures...!

So, there you go.

Ascout, I noticed that myself. Maybe some JG300 material there!

Chuck, or anyone else, have you seen (recently, in the last 10 years), the M15A1 Half-track GMC that Chris spotted at Lewis in 1995?:

That number that you found on the front left, (as you ride in the vehicle) is in the same location I have found it on all Sheridans. I have recorded it as the serial number in my findings, but it's my understanding that it is indeed the Reg number. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I found a couple of half-tracks there, which I have pics of. I'll see if I can crop them and get them up here this weekend.
