AUstralina Centurions in Viet-nam
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hello Gentleman,

I'm currently building the new AFV Club kit of the Centurion Mk5/1 and I was wondering how common was the IR Search Light fitted to the turret and how often was it stored?

Thank You,
D. Gomez

Save it for later...maybe it's just down.

Great links CS...thanks!

Since this subject came up, I have a request of my own:
Does anybody have a good shot of a Cent without the stowage boxes mounted on the turret? I'd like a good look at the turret shape without the clutter.

Hi D.! Hi Folks!

I checked my books (three) and found four photos with a total of eight Centurions. None had the searchlight mounted up front.

Just a though. My guess is that the crews and unit commanders quickly learned that having the lights installed caused them to be damaged and destoryed when the vehicles were moving through heavy brush. Even carried at the stored location could result in damage as the vehicles moved through the bursh and turned the turrets.

Have you read Terry Ashley's review of this kit over at Perth Military Modelling site? The kit has a couple of minor problems which he reports on. I highly recommend you check out Terry's review if you have not already.

I know I have seen a few around, but I can't remember where.

Sorry best I could do on short notice:

Bit of a mess now, aren't they. Guess it pays not to mess with the Leopards. Wink

The book "Jungle Tracks – Australian Armour in Viet Nam" contains accounts of RAAC troops. There's one story about Centurions using their white searchlights to illuminate sampans in an ambush situation. The white searchlights were simply the IR light without the red filter.

If you're after details of RAAC Centurions, follow up the links in this thread on ML:

Yeah it's a good book that one.

I was a little bit hesitant about the AFV Club Cent, since I'd already spent a huge amount of time building a SVN 5/1 out of the Modelcraft Mk.3. I finally picked one up today. I've only had a quick peek inside, looks pretty good.
