Canadian War Museum photo gallery
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

This is indeed a nice collection of pictures. Another couple of caption errors I noticed were refering to the M3 Lee as a Stuart and calling a Sherman 76mm a Firefly.

Hi Maple! Hi Folks!

- Maple_Leaf_Eh
I remember hearing that an Ottawa modeller and vehicle collector (maybe Don Dingwall?) gets the credit for making the ultimate 1:1 scale battle damage diorama with the Stug.

This vehicle was recovered in horrible condition, and rather than rebuild to arsenal standard, the museum decided to make the display representative of the end of a generic Stug's life.

I was wondering why the museum did that. I think that is a nice idea. Thanks for the details.
Sgt, Scouts Out! Smile

You can see what the stug III looked like when it was still at Vimy House at the link below.

Hi Neil, et al
Thanks for the kind words- I owe you a note off line!

Yes, it was Don Dingwall indeed that spruced up the Stug, but it wasn't recovered in horrible condition. It was captured intact originally spent some life at APG then came norh where it ended up as a range target at Shilo or Meaford.

The Panther is indeed behind the doors downstairs- not much done on it recently but I can personally attest that the interior is surprisingly complete. The manual elevation and traverse gear still works!

Bruce, good to hear from you again. Do you happen to have any front one shots of the Stug? As hopeless as it might be, I'd like to see if I can match it up against any old APG photos...

BTW, is that gentleman who showed me around Vimy House still there/alive? He had quite a story - from a German-Canadian immigrant family, his folks sent him to Germany in the 1930s, and he ended up as a JgPz IV crewman on the Eastern Front. Amazed I havent come across his story on the web anywhere...

Hi Neil,
Not sure what you mean by "front one shots". There are photos of this and the StuH that still sits at APG in Speilberger's "Stug and Variants". While out west I don't have all my photos or references at hand so can't give you page numbers but if I recall correctly it is numbered "1055"...

You're referring to my good friend Bruno Friesen, from Kitchener Ontario who served in 7th Panzer division. He has written his life story and circulated it to a couple of publishers but nothing definitive yet. He's still around and will talk your ear off- he's a Volunteer Interpretive Guide at CWM on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.

Cheers!

Sorry, I meant "front shots." J.McGillivray, do you have any? Unfortunately, I dont have that particular book, guess I need to put it on my list...

Look forward to seeing that in print someday! Hopefully I'll get another chance to get up to Ottawa someday...

I don't have any more shots, however, I plan on going back to the CWM before the end of the month

Yup, though I don't have a copy yet.

And I assume you've seen the photos of the Panther they rolled out last weekend?

Cheers!
