Another "Lingle" for Roy
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

OK Roy, here's another "Lingle" for you, and this one has a "surf-board"! It's at the 1st CAV museum here at Ft Hood. Today my 6 year old Morgan and I went to both the 4th ID and 1st Cav museums and I took a total of 98 pictures. I started out going to the 4th ID museum to photograph M3's for Toadman and things snowballed from there, (funny how that happens huh?) So tell me what you think of this M114. I got pictures of M3. M3A1 (interior too!) M5, M5A1, M60, M60A1 (RISE), M60A3 (1 of 5 experimental), M1, and 8 different aircraft that I'll post on Officers Club in a day or two. I've got plenty to post for a while. I still hope to get to the M60's behind range control this weekend. Enjoy!!!

Hi Jeff! Hi Folks!

Thanks Jeff for getting my Saturaday off to a super start!

I have some comments for modellers about this outstanding example of the BEST RECON vehicle ever. After all, isn't that why it is commanly known as the 'LINGLE'. Twisted Evil Mr. Green

Surf Board: It is standing at an odd position. It is about half way between stored and extended. The lower half of the arm used to extend and retract the board is missing. Board is the 1st generation metal type which was later replaced by plywood. One of the things a M-114 (it was in the operator's manuel) could do was jump off short river banks into a stream while moving at high speed. As I understand it, the metal surf boards where upgraded because they tended to fold back around the extention arm when making high speed water entiers. I joined the Army in June of 1968 and all the M114s I saw or worked with all had the plywood type.

Gun mounts: The rear mount for the M-60 machine gun is missing. Looks like something else is mounted at it's location.

Two M2 50 cals? Surprised Wasn't TOE. Rolling Eyes Could it have happiend? Confused I would have mounted a second M2 if I could find one laying around! Wink
I would suggest to the museum staff that they remove it and used it on another vehicle that doesn't have one. A 30 cal Browning would be correct for an early example of a M-114. Of course a M-60 would also be correct.

Question for the museum staff - Why is the TC's cuplo facing to the rear?
It's no biggie, but it does look odd.

The driver's three M26 periscopes are missing. The vision blocks on the TC's cuplo look like many other M114s. All messed up. Vandles I guess. Sad

The data sign. Surprised It is so wrong.
Couldn't keep up with M-113s? Yes, if they were drag racing!
Could carry FOUR passengers? There was only ONE seat for A passenger.

Overall that one doesn't look to bad. Thanks for the photos Jeff!
Sgt, Scouts Out!

Roy or Doug, where do I find the serial number or any other distinguishable marks on an M114?

AFAIK, the only place that had any info was on a data plate mounted on the inside left wall in the driver's area. If there is any data on the outside, I have yet to learn of it.

Spot Report!
