No this is some heavy metal!!!
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Sgt. Gail Gray, from the 505th Engineer Battalion, 101st Airborne Division, poses beside her D9 bulldozer near Tikrit. Gray helped build fighting positions and the first range for the Iraqi Army with her D9. She also helped build a berm around Samarra. Photo by Department of the Army.
I found this on the AKO web-site. That has to be one of the meanest dozers I've ever seen!

Jeff,
I bet she wishes she had a D11.

Great pic!

D9s are the ones that you see driving through building a lot, right?

Yep. A good comparison of D9's, D10's, and D11's can be found at Wikipedia and elsewhere. D11's are very much heavier than the D9, and very much more rare, but they're out there!

Hi Folks!

Looks like a great upgrade to the Vietnam Rome Plows. Nice to see the Army has added armor around the operator's seat.

Sgt, Scouts Out! Smile

My first reaction was - Build a berm 'around' Samarra? As in turn the entire city into a detention camp? I must be misunderstanding something about that quote, right?

Hi Mike, everyone!

The berms aren't really to keep anyone in, so much as to control the access from outside. With the flat desert surrounding a lot of Iraqi cities, it is really tough to make roadblocks work. The bad guys, and pretty much anyone else who doesn't want to be inconvenienced by a roadblock, just bypass it by turning off the road and driving across the desert around the roadblock or checkpoint. The berms make it a lot more difficult for vehicles to enter and exit a city except through designated checkpoints and access roads. This doesn't require a 20' tall berm either. A 8-10' high berm has enough soil to resist all but determined efforts to breach it with some sort of earthmover, and doesn't require a terrible lot of effort or time for a D9 to put up.

(BTW, the D11 dozers weigh nearly twice what a D9 weighs. They are working beasts, but very difficult to move any distance. We had to take them apart, and it took a good week for the Cat techs to put them back together once they arrived. The Army took a good lot of years to decide that they could use D9s instead of getting by with lighter, more mobile D7s.)

C
