Question for the Sherman experts - ID this Sherman
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Dirk,
It's a M4(105) howitzer hull with a 76mm gun T23 turret on it. Not a factory produced tank. Where is this tank located?

I agree that it is a M4 hull, but the travel lock for the gun doesn't look large enough for a 105mm. Maybe it was a proto-type to mount the 76mm T23 turret.

The turret is a later t23 so I doubt it is a prototype. I'd say a range recovery cobbled together by someone. Love the dummy gun. The Travel lock is interchangeable so maybe it has been swapped.
Cheers

As Al (Bowie) wrote, the same travel lock was used for 75-76-105 mm guns, it was just positioned farther down on the glacis for the last.

Where is this tank located?

Many thanks to all for the ID - greatly appreciated .

Time for me to find a copy of the Hunnicutt Sherman book Smile

This tank is at a South African Armour Museum - the photos I took is about 1 year old. Do not know if this tank has been restored , but I do know that a T34/85 was restored to running condition.

Thanks again to all

IIRC, the South Africans used M4A1(76) and M4(105) in during the Italian Campaign. Therefore, this tank was probably put together using components from both types.

Actually, I think it's an earlier T23 turret with the split loader's hatch, which would fit with the notion that this turret might be from one of the M4A1(76) that South African forces used in Italy. It appears that there is a bulge on the left top of the turret to accommodate the split hatch, I think the MG mount can be seen on the front of the hatch, and I haven't seen the casting numbers visible on the right side of the turret on any of the later oval hatch turrets. Of course, this is assuming that you are defining "early" vs. "late" 76mm. turrets the same way I am, i.e., split vs. oval loader's hatch.

Cheers,

Scott Taylor

I got lucky I guess, I managed to get Abrams off Ebay for $196, and Patton for $182. Although I ended up paying $272 for Stuart.... Still looking for Firepower, but I havent seen a good deal on it yet (ie less than $400)...

Oh yeah, and y'all will hate me for this, but two years ago I also got Sherman off Ebay (in decent condition) for just $175!

That's okay. When the Sherman was reissued in the 90's, I picked mine up from the bookstore my girlfriend worked at for...$54.00.
