Hmmm...

I really do mean, Hmmm...

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 S775, 2.40Ghz, 1066Mhz FSB, Conroe Core, 4M Cache Retail £250 ish

very, very attractive price. I hate to admit it but it stomps all over the FX62 as well, most of the benchmarks I've seen were with the E6400 chip.

I always though that AMD and Nvidia got on well, but it appears from another thread that Intel and Nvidia are better bed partners.

I do like Nvidia mobo's...

bugger

KNEW I'd get ya, if I stuck at it!

Even if you still wanna go with AMD (which is fine), both manufacturers are way ahead of the markets.
They both have more stock on their hands than they can shake Flossy the Illiterate Sheep at already.
And their shareholders are dissappointed with both their figures for the year so far.
When these new cores start coming out as well, they're both going to have to find some way to intice you and me into forking out for them and that means heading further and further towards Bushy's favourite pricing structure.

You could see a complete shake-up of both manufacturers in order to keep both off their respective 'back foot' and the results of the next few months could see a totally different market in 2007.

Mobo’s for Conroe…

Doesn’t seem to be a lot of choice and I don’t understand the chipsets

i965 (Intel board) (read somewhere that this is the better chipset???)
i975x (Intel board)
iP965 (Gigabyte board)

Also, what’s the point of having two PCI-E x16 graphics slots when the mobo doesn’t support crossfire or sli?

I’m very close to going the Conroe E6700 route but I would like to run two Nvidia 7900 cards in sli mode…The other alternative is the 7900 x2 card (two cards in one).

Help please.

Hmmm hadn't thought about mobo's.
Gimme a few to have one or two words with my 'sources' for ya.
I'll get back to ya shortly.

EDIT:-

I know CC members tend to favour Asus mobo's so; I found THIS table of Asus mobo's which support Intel dual cores (SLi, Crossfire, or otherwise).

I've posted on your behalf on BYO

Here's one I've found myself;
THIS Asus P5W DH Delux; 975X; ATi Crossfire though.
Good gaming / multimedia board.

THIS Asus P5N32-SLI SE Deluxe, Sli, (supports RAID-0, 1, and 0+1, and 5 - if you got 4x drives in 0+1 and Conroe, and SLi, you wouldn't keep up with the thing).

Already been pointed towards;

THIS Asus P5NSLI (nVidia SLi), but I prefer the look of the P5N32-SLI SE Deluxe.

Mobo performance test comparison (haven't checked the specs of the mobo's but the ones suggested are in there with a few others).

Thanks for the info Shades, sorry about the delay in responding...Been away again, bloody work Smile

I had the P5N32 SLI Deluxe on my first list and then forgot all about it since ebuyer or scan didn't stock it, but that's the mobo to have I believe. Very similar specs to the AMD version mobo (A8N32-SLI-Deluxe)

So I think the jobs sorted. P5N mobo, Conroe E6700, 2Gig DDR2 matched ram (probably corsair) and a couple of Nvidia 7900 graphics cards as the core system.

Couple of SataII drives, may as well get a new Xblade case to put it all in with a Hiper 580 Watt Psu.

Hmmm, may as well break the bank and have a look for a nice flat screen monitor Smile

(Gotta start doing some more overtime...lol)

Way to go Kit, so it wont be long till your built n running, one thing though, my experience with xblade cases are they dont provide the best cooling, i have 2 systems both very simlar in build one in xblade case one in akasa aluminium case the latter being far supierior on the temperature side,
also the akasa case has a slide out M/B tray with Stainless steel reflector plus side and top accesss, the akasa is running 2x 7900gts at a lower core temp as a single 7900gt in the xblade, it could be the extra width of the case plus the aluminium that helps, but this extra width is hardly noticable as a size issue.
Xblades may look fancy but as regards cooling n ease of use i find them inferior, the other downside i noticed with my xblade was the front door, burn a disc n forget to open it n bang the dvd/rw door slides out onto door.
i think i payed £62 for my akasa from overclockers uk, money well spent, i'm even recasing the other system asap, so i'll let you know the temp issue soon as i do it....
good luck with the rebuild.

Thanks Ban for the low down on the cases.

I was going for another Xblade case just to match my existing one. I've had a look at the link you posted for your Akasa case, it lloks like the drive bays are the traditional set up with screws, you'll know what I mean about the Xblade drive bays, excellent in my opinion, side mounted and screwless for the internal bays.

To be honest I would have expected that as two cards sharing the graphics won't be under as much load as a single card. Would be interesting to see if the single card temp drops in an Akasa case.

May go for a Thermaltake psu yet which may influence case choice. Only have enough room for a midi size case though.

well the bay is a clip in design, you can pull the whole shebang out too, also theres more room for later liquid coolers etc, i can only go from what i see here but as regards quality akasa beat xblade hands down, the case is renowned for its superior cooling to so i'm certain the single vid card deal will prove in akasa's favour,
only drawback i see is the colour, if existing dvd writers etc aint black and your scavaging from old system you feck the look of it, cost me 2 dvd/rws in black lol, i had planned on using my older ones. also like you say the size maybe a issue, but man the quality of builds pretty damn top imo'

heres a better look at it, but for the life of me i cant understand why this guys shoved a psu in it with old wireing, i have a tagan in mine and thats handy having removable wires etc.

If you're up for a case at the £65.00 mark, look at the Coolermaster WaveMaster. I bought this case over two years ago.
It's not a fancy "Close encounters" case but it does look very classy, in a subtle sort of way.
It has good ventilation, it's quite quiet and it's amazing to use for a build.
There's so much space in this thing I've been parking my bike in it when it rains.
The mobo shelf is raised some way off the side panel (both panels are removeable which is great when building). The advantage of this becaomes apparent once you've built... you can hide all the cabling behind it and the HDD shelving quite easily. This keeps the inside of the case tidy and airflow optimum.
There are one or two sharp edges which I think really should have been finished properl at the factory but that's the only criticism I have of it.
When I bought my Wavemaster two years ago, it cost me £129.00. Now you can get them for under £70.00.
Do not underestimate this case.
It's of much higher calibre than the current price suggests.
There are others but I think the brushed aluminium is the best finish.
If you want a side window, you may have to buy it separately.

Hmmm.., prices seem to be going up again.
THIS is the lowest I could find it at today.

I have considered the Conroe, there is no doubt that it out performs AMD's top chip by a substantial margin and I have no other reason for not using it other than a personal one.

lol...you still holding that AMD grudge against me Kit..face it, Intel rules!!

btw..the 9700GT cards you guy's are looking at kick ass in SLI. but be carefull which mobo you get, make sure that the 16x pcie bus's actually work in tandem 32x...there are a few boards out there that will only allow one card to work in 16x and the other in 4x.
