M4A3 76mm Sherman at 1st Cav Museum...
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

I burnt the heck out of my right palm holding my self up to get pictures inside the pistol port on the turret. This Sherman had no engine as well but it did have some stampings that were readable. Front left hull had "A 83 30100178", while the right front hull had "591" stamped. Rear tow lugs had 43944 stamped, even though you really cant tell from my picture. Otherwise a very nice tank. I hope I'm whitleing away on your list Neil. Does Kurt Laughlin get on here any more? He assisted me greatly in my research on the Ft Irwin Sherman, my first foray into armor research and I bet he'd have something to say about all these Shermans.

I forgot these pictures before. I could only get three interior pictures because of the surface heat on this tank.

Okay, I forget.

What's the box attached to the left side of the hull? I've noticed this on only the "Korean War" versions.

Looks like the 'documents pouch' that we had on AGE (Aerospace Ground Equipment) It kept the vehicle forms where they could be easily looked at. For a peacetime army it would mean that the forms were with the vehicle but you wouldn't have to climb inside to check them. For vehicles in heavy use I imagine it would be safer to keep them in the vehicle Smile

Jeff

A first aid kit was stored inside it.

Okay Is there a similar aid kit I've missed on other 50's era tanks (M26, M47, etc?) or was it an idea that didn't catch on?

Here's another for Joe DeMarco to find a serial for. I hope he doesn't mind, I owe him for the amount of assistance he's given.

hey bob,
the M26, M45 had first aid kits on the tail end of the port fender. didnt carry over to the M46 (exhaust arrangement?). and compared to the shermans, the pershing/patton family had tons of stowage bins (no longer need the external first aid kit)....

The box was referred to as an "Armored First Aid Kit Box". It was added to late production WW2 tanks and some post war rebuilds. It was welded to the tanks side (M4A1 76W, HVSS, M4A3 76 HVSS, M4A3 105 HVSS, etc) or on the fenders (M26, M24 light, etc). The box was to be mounted several degrees off the horizontal so water would drain away. It was just a steel box with a clasp lid that help a GI vehicle first aid kit (the ones I've seen in photos had metal box).

That has to be the most heavy duty 1st Aid box I've ever seen! I would have thought they were much thinner. Maybe it's the picture size that makes it look so big, haha.

I remember long ago building the Tamiya M4A3E8 1/35 remote control kit and wondering why that darn thing was mounted so crooked! Laughing Now I know!

Great pics by the way!!
