M4A1 at 4ID museum...
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hi Folks!

Now I have a question for all of you Shermanoholics. Shocked

That vehicle has the E9 system?

Is that based on the number and locations of nuts that are welded to the hull side?

Without a:
1. front view where I could see the track is set out,
2. no duck bills on the inside of the track block,
3. closer photo of the idler mounts where the modification to the mount can been seen,
I had/have no idea that vehicle has an E9 system on it.

Confuzed
Sgt, Scouts Out! Confused

Hi Roy,
My first indicator other than the nuts on the hull side was the space between the final drive covers and the inner end connectors of the tracks. In the first two pics of the tank, you can see that there is space there. Normal VVSS suspensions have very minimal space.

I've taken one of Jeff's pics, lightened it up and cropped out most of the tank to show the modified idler wheel brackets:

With the angle of the views, I just wasn't see enough space. Confused

I just came from going back to this tank over my lunch again and I got more pictures. One picture is from the rear, looking right down the left side between the hull and the track its self. Plus some other shots. I'll post them tonight along with the M4A3 sitting next to it and another M4A3 I found over in 1st Cav land that has complete serial number and stampings readable. I have to keep you "Shermaholics" hooked up!

If SFC Burton doesn't mind - here's a photo I took of this vehicle a couple of years ago from the front (and before a much needed paint job). Shows the track set out - but no inner duckbills installed. All this time I never realized that this was an E9!

OK, I got some more pictures today of the "E9" and I hope they show the spacing of the track from the hull. I also got some shots of the drivers hatches, top of the turret, top of the tank, radial engine, and a rear view as well as one of the idler wheel with its stampings.
Roy, The last name is "Button", like the button on your shirt. Jeff Burton drives the #31 Cingular Chevy for Richard Childress and has the pole for this weekends race at MIS. But don't worry, I get called Burton all the time and just today my commander called me 1SG Booth!

That could be useful, Jeff. I'd blame that Booth feller for every deficiency that crops up. Wink

Sorry Mr. Button, sir - that was me, not Roy.

I sure do appreciate your photos! Hoping to work out my schedule sometime before too long to make a visit back out to Fort Hood.

Thanks

thanks for the pics. things become more apparent now. one look is worth a thousand reports, pictures will be the closest thing for now.

i am not suggesting to imply this, it really would open pandora's box (you would lose either way), too bad that blaming the booth feller idea couldnt be used at home...
