Quiz Time
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hi Bob!

I have no idea.

My SWAG is that is part of the fan tower of a German WW II Mk IV tank engine compartment.

Hi Bob! Hi Folks!

- bsmart

What is it?

Now that I have received some additional intell, let me update my first answer. Razz

1st clue I missed was the Sea Foam Green paint! Clearly a US vehicle.
Not a tank, those were painted white.
Not a M-113 APC, the fan shroud doesn't look like that.
That fan shroud is not in it assigned place, but is just laying on the floor of the power pack compartment.
Those two green elbow joints are part of the air intake system for the engine.
That black pipe that looks like it is wraped in aluminum is part of the engine exhaust plumbing.

The one thing I missed which clearly ID this vehicle ,and super shame on me for it, is that rod!
That is either the transmission shifter linkage or the steering linkage to the steering gear which sat at the very front end of this hull.

The photo was taken through the assess hatch for the dip stick to the steer gear.
The radiator water level, the transmission fluid and engine oil levels were all checked by folding back that grill door running next to the driver's hatch openning and the side of the TC cupola. The engine was mounted facing the rear of the vehicle with the trasmission in between it and the steer gear. The fan shroud divided the power pack area into two areas. Air was pulled down through the grills next to the driver and TC positions. It was push forward into the steer gear area, made a 180 turn to the left side of the vehicle (standing in front of one, looking the it) pass over the muffler and exit through a grill that ran along the right edge of the hull.

That photo is what is left of a M-114 power pack compartment.
Good one Bob, you got me on that one!

I think the last time I saw that area of this type of vehicle was back in 1979 just before I left the 3rd ACR. Crying or Very sad

Since Roy explained it so well I'll go ahead and close the issue.

Yes it is the Frederick MD M114. It was taken through the armored 'filler cap' on the frontplate that is very visible in the pictures Jeff took at Ft Hood. While out there trying to get access to the interior yesterday I noticed the cap would open and put the camera up next to what I think is the radiator filler neck and shot. You can actually see more in the picture than you can by looking in the hole! From this I'm assuming that the engine has been removed from this monument.

I will admit to having a chuckle when Mr Lingle ID'ed it as German

I was going to say M114 just because of the posts and the size of the fan tower its self. However I didn't vote because I didn't look into that area of the Lingle when I was inside. Having worked around M557 and M1064's, I knew it wasn't an M113 family fan tower.
