"Lingle" for Roy from Jeffrey, inside pics too!!!!
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Roy, I hear you have a thing for "lingles". And when me and my dad were out today we found one. On the corner of 76th St and Battalion Ave, in front of 1st brigade combat team HQ. We found the USA number, 13B909, 005 on the right front hull. On the data plate as you can see the date is 7-65 and the serial number is 3127.

Hi Ascout! Hi Folks!

- JG300-Ascout

A little bit of work and she'll be right as rain!

Sorry Ascout. I must disagree with you. If one does not count the very nice looking paint job on the out side, that vehicle is the second worst (as in missing parts) Lingle we have all seen in the past few years. I think Dontos' find on a range at Camp Shelby is the worst one.

It is good to see that the data plate is almost were I remember it. I was thinking it was on the upper wall, rather than on the lower one. I remember it was somewhere near the driver's seat. Along with not knowning the serial number was on the outside, never noticed the USA Number was also on the outside of the hull.

At least enough remains so that folks can still tell is was a M-114.

That Data plate was actually right behind the fire extinguisher that is visable just behind and below the crivers seat. I pulled the bottle out of the way to get the picture. Jeffrey was wound up to post this for you. When I found it was open, I thought I'd hit pay-dirt, as nothing I hardley ever find is open. I'm just sorry it was missing so much. I noticed the 20mm storage positions everywhere. I understand 50cal, 7.62mm, and 5.56mm, but 20mm? Did you actually fire 20mm in some configuration?

Hi Jeffrey! Hi Folks!

Thank you very much for helping your Dad with finding that Lingle. It makes my day when I learn another one has survived and not used for a target or home for fish.

- Jeffrey_Button

In the above photo, we can see the second gen plywood surf board.
The longer arm of the two part surf board extending and retraction arm is missing.
The front tie down loop is missing from the side of the hull. It looks like that thing on the side of the hull at the rear.
IR and service drive lights are missing.

- Jeffrey_Button

Again the front tie down loop is missing along with the IR drive light. The plywood surfboard looks like the rain has been getting to it and will need replacement some day.

- Jeffrey_Button

The tie down loop is missing one mounting bolt. Not sure but the red stop light lens maybe missing from the left rear tail light. Both rear mud flaps are missing. The metal strap that holds the spade end of the shovel looks like it is bent in some.

With that plywood cover where the TC's turret goes, I would GUESS this vehicle WAS a M-114A2 with the XM-27 powered turret and the M-139 20mm autocannon. No way to be sure from this photo however. As I understand it, most if not all A2s lost their XM-27 turrets to the M-901 TUA conversion project. Point for the museum director. Two many R/T antenna bases. A platoon leader's vehicle would only have two. Both mounted on the driver's side of the vehicle. A section/squad leader's vehicle would have one R/T base, just behind the driver's hatch and aux receiver base at the rear mounting point on the driver's side. An assistance squad leader's vehicle would only have one R/T base behind the driver's hatch.
Both bases for the observer's machine gun mount are missing.
Driver's hatch is missing the removeable armored plug used to plug the mounting hole for the IR driving scope.
Observer's hatch is missing the turn table for his periscope.
There is a cover with three bolts holding it down. That was where the vent dome cover was. Something like the one used on the M-113 APCs.
Two odd items:
1. Something on the hull just in front of the left rear R/T base. No idea what that is.
2. Notice that the Observer's hatch has a cut out on the left edge. That is where a hook like devise is turned over the hatch to lock it closed. The hook and the hole where the rod it was on the end of came up through hull is missing! Surprised

[quote="Jeffrey_Button"]

This photo clearly ID's this poor Lingle as an Ex-A2 which had the 20mm cannon.
And SOMEBODY repainted the inside with WHITE paint! WRONG, Evil or Very Mad WRONG, Evil or Very Mad WRONG Evil or Very Mad ! The A2s and all the A1s I ever saw were all SEA FOAM GREEN just like all the M-113 APCs I ever saw!
That black item is the back rest for the Observer's seat. It should be mounted on those two metal taps that are standing up at the front edge of the shelf.

[quote="Jeffrey_Button"]

This is the TC's side of the vehicle. You can see where the seat back goes for the ONE passenger this vehicle could carry. Below the seat back are two black round objects. That is the underside of the passenger's seat which is spring folded up against the side wall.
The hole in the roof is the underside of the air vent which is missing the cover on the top side.
Something I had forgotten about until seeing this photo was the rack for a M-79 G.L. It was stood up along the left edge of the photo. You can see a bracket mounted on the side wall were the butt of the launcher was placed. Between Germany and Ft. Bliss we had M-203 G.L. I don't ever remember carrying a M-79 while on a M-114..???...
Mounted on the side wall and below the area for "Tool Bag Storage" is what is left of the T.C.s seat assemble were you can see two coil springs. That black thing, the green rod and two green bolts is the top part of the elevator mechanism for the T.C.s seat.

Looking into the Driver's compartment. Forward of the data plate, there is an item that was painted red with some white overspray. That is the one and only fixed five pound fire extinguisher. Just in front of the top of the extinguisher is the vertial part of the driver's seat. To the right of that is a plate which is the back side of the forward/rearward adjustment for the driver's seat. The back rest folded forward and layed down on the seat. I can't tell if that item is still there. Maybe part of it is. To the left of the driver's seat is an odd shaped box with most of the white paint pealing off. That is the storage box for the IR driving scope. Above it and on the wall is a smaller box with a tappered bottom. That is the stroage box for the spare head for the IR scope. That open area between the IR scope box and the left edge of the photo is where a plate was mounted just above the surface of the sponson. The radio system was mounted on that plate. Looking at the area passed the IR storage box and the gage panel is a bulkhead that angles out for the left wall until it lines up with the inside edge of the sponson. The area behind that bulkhead is the gas tank. Looking at the left end of the T-bar, you may be able to just make out a line. Going up from the T-bar it runs to a point on the hull between the two vision blocks. Going down for the T-bar, angling away from the viewer, it goes through a clamp and down behind something that I am not sure about. Maybe a foot rest, the gas peddle, or maybe part of the driver's seat. That line is a clear plastc tube that the Driver used for a gas gage. That small cyclinder and pipes on the right bulkhead I think (?) was part of the XM-27 turret hydraulic system.

Update post: After see Bob's engine compartment photo, that reminded me of something else that is missing from area in front of the driver's position. The air filtercover and filter element are missing. It's hard to make out but the top of the air intake is behond the T-bar, hanging down for the roof.

Super job Jeffrey, thanks for helping your Dad photograph that Lingle for me. One question for you, 1st BCT of which division? 1st Cav or 4th Inf?

Man, does that bring back some old times! Lots of headaches and some fun.

Hi Jeff! Hi Folks!

- SFC_Jeff_Button

Jeffrey was wound up to post this for you.
I noticed the 20mm storage positions everywhere. I understand 50cal, 7.62mm, and 5.56mm, but 20mm?
Did you actually fire 20mm in some configuration?

Super thanks to the both of your for all your hard work on this one.

20mm? You bet you!

That is a M-114A1E1 or sometimes called a M-114A2. It mounts a XM-27 turret with hydraulic power. The gun cradle held a M-139 20mm auto cannon made under licence from Hispano-Suiza of Switzerland.

The 25mm auto cannon mounted in the Bradleys was the winner of the Brushmaster program. The M-139 was one of two other losers in that project. Possible a good thing in the long run.

Spot Report!

Roy, the surfboard does need to be replacted. I'll tell my dad to notify the 1st cav museum director, that there are to many R/T antenna bases. 1. Something on the hull just in front of the left rear R/T base. No idea what that is. Where would that be. I notice that the interior was paint white.

A couple observatuions from comparing this one to the M114 in Frederick MD

1) Could this be a coverplate where a pedistal for a machine gun could be located? The Frederick vehicle has 2 mounts for pintle mount MGs around this hatch that are bolted to the top deck with 4 bolts each.

2) Roy I hate to question you on Lingle details but I looked at the Frederick MD M114 again today. The notch at the edge of the hatch appears to be where the 'hold open' on the post to the rear of the hatch would catch it and hold it open. I didn't see any indication of a hole or lever that would engage it when it was in the closed position. I thought that catch would be on the inside of the hatch so the crew could batton down the hatch to deny anyone outside access to the vehicle.

That "something on the hull just in front of the left rear R/T base", would be my sunglasses! We actually got in the car and started to drive off when I realized I had left them on the M114. I stopped the car across from the Lingle and Jeffrey ran across to grab them. Two things I can't live without, my watch and sunglasses!

1) ? You lost me Bob, unless you are talking about Jeff's sunglasses?
Now that I know what I am looking at, I can see that object is a pair of glasses.
If you remove one of the two bases for the gun mount, the only thing under it is the four holes for the bolts, none of which goes all the way through.

2. You are very right. For the life of me, I can not remember what holds that rear hatch closed. The device I was thinking about is on the driver's hatch. That's why I can't see the hole were it comes up through the hull!

That locking system required crews of the M-114A1s and A2s to place the gun cradle down on top of the driver's hatch so the hook could not be knocked out of the way and the driver's hatch opened from the outside. One of the M-114's many faults which the Army saw no reason to correct.

Man, it has been a great week end, thanks everyone!

Forgrt my comment #1. For some reason the glasses looked like shadows around a coverplate. Maybe I need to upgrade my monitor.

Both of us missed those sunglasses.
At least you picked on my mistake about the cut into the side of the observer's hatch and what is was for.

You know, for an ex-USAF type, you make an outstanding CIA.

I wonder what the market is for a special run of "Curmudgeon In Armor" Tee-shirts? I'm guessing we wouldn't need any in small or medium sizes. Wink
