This is what happens when you hit an ied.

The first thing I notice about those pics is the uniformity of size (and apparently shape) of the missiles. Looks to be spherical and roughly the size of buckshot. Not just an IED, but either an improvised weapon that was encased in something like a mess of ball bearings, or a conventional weapon rather like a claymore mine. The distribution of hits is pretty uniform also, as is direction.

Whatever the projectiles, they were soft...just bounced of the gunshield while disintegrating. Made impressions on the sides (which look to be aluminum) but only penetrated the sheet metal...and likely didn't hurt any occupants, unless the gunner was exposed.

This was no roadside car bomb. Is anything more known about the device?
