M4A1 at 4ID museum...
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hi Chris! Hi Folks!

- toadmanstankpictures

Did anyone else notice that the grouser stowage covers are on backwards?

I noticed on a number of Shemans that those covers face to the rear. I think it is a case of the last individual looking at them and thinking they should face that direction.

Make something so people can install it backwards and many will.

Hi Jeff! Hi Folks!

Whats a "grouser stowage cover"?

At the top edge of your photo, that item covered with wire mesh to the right of the tail light. That is a removable cover for a storage area in the rear corners of the hull above the tracks.
From the factory that open (mesh side) faces forward. My guess is that would pull air into the storage area and help keep the area dry. The VVSS type of track blocks had a removeable grouser that could be mounted for use on muddy and icicy conditions. The grouseres were stacked inside that storage area when not mounted.

Spot Report!

The vents were repotedly there because of a breather from the fuel tank on an M4/M4A1. They don't show up on the M4A3s, and I don't think they were there on M4A2 or M4A4 either.

One does occasionally see a picture of them reversed. I don't know if this was from some GI not caring if the $%^& things were on right, or a conscious to reduce bullet entry.

Fuel tank vent into those storage compartments? Crying or Very sad

I pulled out my Hunnicutt Sherman and did a quick scan of most of the book.

The vent type cover shows up on M4s, M4A1s, and M4A6s.
The M4A2 does have the storage compartment which is covered with a flat plate.
There are photos of M4A4s with vents and plates. Surprised

The M4A3 is the only hull that doesn't have the grouser storage compartments in those areas of the hull. Confused

I did learn while checking for the vent covers that each compartment could hold 13 grousers. Razz
I didn't notice any explanation for why some hulls have the vents and others have plates.

Interesting!
