M48 Shillelagh prototype walk around
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Goin through my guide of foundry symbols and markings, I would say that the bottom picture with the S in a circle would probably mean that part was cast by Symington-Gould Corp, Rochester, NY.
I believe the hull was cast by Continental Foundry and Machine, Wheeling, WV. which built large armor. The HT2234 is believed to be a heat treatment number. The SER184 would be the serial number for the casting piece. I'm not to sure about the DTA, I can't find a reference for it.
Hard to believe such a rare vehicle sits in front of a VFW and not at the Patton museum.

A case could also be made for Aberdeen since it was a prototype/test article. I had a conversation with Charles Lemmons when I was out at Knox last year and he said they want to fill out the 'main stream' of armor development as opposed to one of a kind test vehicles.

But yea seeing a rare bird like that at a VFW is like the T95 in Weirton WV, or the First Chrysler produced M3 Lee (SN 3) at the Newark DE American Legion. At least they are still around Smile

Hey Neil,
Maybe version 2.0 should have a section dedicated to the rare and "one-of" vehicles and where they are. (Like you need another suggestion on how to do your listings huh?).

Jeff, not a bad idea. I have tried to make footnotes & include info to that effect, but a seperated section may be a good idea. Lets shelve that one until 2.5 or something like that...
