can't have too little spare tracks...
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Notice that the turret on the 'Firefly' has german track mounted to it. Unusable on any allied vehicle

Wonder whether it could be CDP (Canadian Dry Pin) tracks rather than German?

Claus B

I believe you may be correct. Quite similiar to Panzer III & Panzer IV styled 'pin' track.

Claus, knocked out German tanks were in abundance, CDP track was not. . .
So I would put a bet on German tank track.

I scanned a close up of CDP tracks on a Grizzly tank in a book that I have. I positioned the photo upside down to get the same prospective as the tracks that Claus posted.

Compare them to the types of the Panzer IV tracks.

It dose look like the tracks on the Firefly are CDP.

I still think it looks more like CDP than German track, though. AFAIK Sextons were mostly running on CDP, so they might have come across a few links dumped by the artillery Smile

They're grousers aren't they. Not track links. They fit over the end connectors of the regular tracks so you have a raised rib which digs in a gives better traction.

They are grousers and not track links. The grousers clip onto the tracks of the tank and are used to improve traction on soft ground. The Stuarts have brackets on the turret sides and/or the hull front (depending on the model of Stuart) to carry the grousers when they are not in use.

The Churchill's advantage over both Tigera and Panthers (in North Africa and Italy) was the higher rate of fire and speedier traverse. When the OK arrived to use track links for additional protection, as tests showed that adding them to the turret slowed the speed of traverse, we were not allowed to add them other than on the hull. The report on the the tests was submmitted to the UK but, for some unexplained reason, was not passed on to the Churchill units in NWE.

By all accts the crews thought the extra protection offered was a bonus and as the main threat at that stage of war was a chemical vs kinetic munition such as a Panzerfaust then they also offered a dgree of spaced armour . Crews more than tanks were important at that stages as it was relatively easy to replace a vehicle but the commonwealth formations were running out of manpower.
Cheers
