Who reads russian?
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hello everybody,

I need to know what's going on about this StuG III (40) G, which seems to be stored in Sevastopol (Russia).
Who could read this topic and tell me what's going on?

My Russian is rusty (no pun intended) to say the least but with a little help from babelfish ...

This is one of two StuG's raised from the wreck of the German cargo vessel Santa Fe, and I believe it is the same one that was later acquired by Mike Gibb of the SdKfz Foundation.

Rik, I think it is not the SDKFZ Foundation one, simply because, having a look on the properties of the photo, it clearly indicates that it was taken on March 4th, 2006. Also, comparing a photo of Mike Gibbs' StuG and this one, there are 2 details on the hulls that prove they are not the same one. So maybe this is the second StuG which was recovered from the "Santa Fe". The website 'Lerenfort' says that 2 other wrecks have been recovered.

Don't try to translate this page - it's looks like "broken phone" Smile

What i know about Santa Fe. He is sinked in 23 november 1943. Cargo of Santa Fe:

- 12 StuG 40, as i can see, all Ausf.G;
- 2 "Panzerjagers", in 90% it's Marders;
- some AA guns - 8.8 cm Flak 38, Flak 41.

2001 trophy from sea:

- 2 StuG 40 Ausf.G
- some AA guns - 1-2 Flak 37, another guns in unknowm for me (no photos).

Thanks for the info and the page with these photos. I think it is the StuG for sale, quoting the website Lerenfort :

"The "Sante Fe" has yet again released two more Stug III! One is offered for sale by the group responsible for the recovery, this Stug is restorable using parts of the fourth vehicle also raised recently."

So, there were a "trapezoidal" StuG recovered and a Saukopf one (now belongin to Mike Gibbs), for the first recovery. This one in Sevastopol is different from Mike Gibbs' one and this is not a trapezoidal one, so I can conclude it is the third one recovered..

You need to know one thing: Crimea now - it's a part of Ukraine (from 60-s, gift of Khrushev). In Russia all AFVs, artillery and AFV/artillery wrecks - it's property of Ministry of Defence. In Ukraine different laws, maybe some StuGs from Santa Fe already not in the Sevastopol. As i know, owner of wrecks already sell Flaks.
