Stu, StuG 40 and StuG III
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

You are entirely right, that's what I will do. However, I just try to understand why we can find all those denominations. What you explain enlighten the complexity of the subjects. Maybe I have to let that to specialists.. Wink

Just mentioned Jentz as an example as he and Spielberger (in his later volumes, at least) have taken care to present many of the different names, who used them etc. I appreciate the problem of sorting such things out, one which is compounded by many people insisting that there are "correct" names without ever appreciating how those orderly and tidy Germans could make such a dogs breakfast of this naming business Smile

gepanzerte Selbstfahrlafette für Sturmgeschütz 7,5cm Sturmkanone 40 Ausf. F" (or F/8 or G)

became simply

"Sturmgeschütz III für 7,5cm StuK 40 L/48"

My take on this after 30 years of rummaging around books and the german archives is that (and the general principle relates to the designations for all german afvs)

'gepanzerte Selbstfahrlafette für Sturmgeschütz 7,5cm Sturmkanone 40 AusF F'

is the designation for the chassis only

'7,5cm Sturmkanone 40 auf SelbstFahrgestell PzIII'

would be the designation for the weapon only on that vehicle and

'Sturmgeschütz III für 7,5cm StuK 40 L/48'

would be the designation for the complete vehicle.

Of course if you were a german commander and you needed a replacement vehicle you would order an SdKfz 142/1 which would get you the latest version being produced under that designation....

Cool

You could be right, but that is not what Jentz says. As he puts it, one designation replaced the other, all referring to the vehicle.

Also, there seems to be some semantic issues as well - '7,5cm Sturmkanone 40 auf SelbstFahrgestell PzIII' - litterally meaning '7,5cm Sturmkanone 40 on selfpropelled chassis PzIII'. Also, why would there be any difference in meaning between

'gepanzerte Selbstfahrlafette für Sturmgeschütz 7,5cm Sturmkanone 40 AusF F'

and

'Sturmgeschütz III für 7,5cm StuK 40 L/48'

Seems to me that they mean exactly the same, except that the name of the chassis has changed. I see no reason why one would assume that the latter includes more than the former, quite frankly.

But I'd be interested in some examples on how this would actually work from original texts!
