Post subject: FS9 Setup and Tweak Sight

Been looking for some information to configure my FS9 game and vid card. I have been having issues with my screen freezing during game play. Seems to happen when I switch views as in pan left or right, open the chat window in Multiplayer and just about any other time during game play. It freezes then comes back to the game after a flicker with the window.

The freezes have just came about recently and its really frustrating since they seem to be getting worse. Updated my vid card drivers for my FX5200, to 71.84 and that could be the culprit. Or it could be my cheap Vid card is just going caput too. But I really dont have the funds to spend on a new one so I want to try messing with the settings first before I commit to a new one.

Any information or anyone having a similar problem and fix to this issue would be appreciated

thanks
Boo

Hi BooRay,

No expert here but could you be more specific as to what Vidcard, mobo, CPU, RAM, etc etc
There are various options:

a. you have to look in your bios how the AGP aperture is set ?? normal setting half that of your vidcard, for example your vidcard 128 Mb, then set it to 64 Mb.

b. the CPU wich you have can only perform so many calculations within a certain time and it uses RAM memory to do so.

c. Also could be a driver issue

d. I've applied the following setings :

Scenery
Terrain mesh complexity = 100
Terrain size texture = high
Terrain detail = land only
Water effects = high
Dawn/dusk texture blending = checked
Extended terrain textures = checked
Special effects detail = high
Scenery complexity = Dense
Autogen Density = Dense
Add-on dynamic scenery = checked / setting = extremely dense
Ground scenery cast shadows = checked
Sun glare = checked
Lens flare = checked

Aircraft
Quality = Ultra high
Virtual cockpit gauge quality = high
Reflections = checked
Aircraft casts shadows = checked
Landing lights = checked

Weather
Sight distance minimum= 60 miles
Cloud draw distance = 50 miles
3D cloud percentage = 80 (higher doesn't give a noticable difference)
Detailled clouds = checked
Cloud coverage density = Maximum

Hardware
Render to Texture = NOT checked
Transform and Lightning = checked
Anti Aliasing = NOT checked
Filtering = bilinear
MIP mapping = 5
Hardware rendered lights = 3
Global max texture size = Massive

Target frame rate = 20 (higher doesn't improve anything and also eats up resources)

P4 2,8 running as 3,08 on ASUS P4C800 "de luxe"
2G RAM Corsair DDR 3200 pro
320 G (4 x 80G) HD's
ATI Radeon 9800pro
screen res 1280 x 1240 32 bit
the latest ATI drivers
monitor = Sony HMD-A-420 19" Trinitron

system build in July 2003

I hope it helps you a bit further searching for the culprit, but I think when you trim down the setting you have it maybe also goes a bit smoother but can't comment on that as I don't know what you have set.

Hey Boo

from what you have told us so far I would reckon you have a misinstalled set of vid drivers..

I always
Download new drivers and unzip them to a desktop folder
Remove the existing Nvidia drivers in add / remove programs in your control panel..
Use detonator RIP program to completely remove all previous nvidia entrys (available from guru3D.com )
Restart machine, hit cancel every time it says found new hardware etc
When it settles on you desktop goto your vid drivers folder and run the setup exe
Restart your machine and reset your resolution settings etc (inc Vsync off)

This is particuarly relevant when changing driver series ie 66.?? to 71.??
another point is the latest drivers may well be not the most suitable for your card I would use 66.93 on a FX5??? card.. the newer drivers just have a load off stuff that is inapplicable to your machine..

You could also check for ghost drivers by starting machine in safe mode and then looking in your device manager... if you see more than one vid adaptor showing delete both and then restart machine it should refind the drivers

Thanks for the replys, I will start with removing my drivers and then a full reinstall and maybe even an earlier driver since my vid card my not support the latest.

Second I will make appropiate changes to my settings to see if the problem is resolved this way.
