Some ID Help needed...
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

No, not the M48 turrets... The vehicles in the background. Leopard 1-based right? But I cant quite figure out what they are...

Just an educated guess, but it looks like the missile armed version of the Jagdpanzer Kanone called the Jagdpanzer Rakete. The missile raised out of those two top doors.

Are those M48 turrets or early M60 turrets?

I'd guess M48 and not early M60 for the following reasons:
1. Position of the bore evacuator at the end of the barrel (muzzle brake removed) vs. the center identifies this as a 90mm vs a 105mm gun.
2. The Bundeswehr used the M48, but not the M60.

Thanks Rob...I couldn't tell if that bore evacuator was at the end or the middle of the barrel...the perspective is skewed by the angle of the shot. I think you're probably right.

Jaguar 2s. Think old JPZ Kanones with the 90mm gun removed and pop-up TOW missile launcher installed. Those tall periscope masts were recycled - originally guidance periscopes for the the wire-guided missiles on the JPZ Racket (or however it was spelled).

Its appropriate to see M48 turrets in the foreground. the M48 and JPZ Kanone both chambered the same 90mm ammo (Though the JPZ Kanone had a much shorter barrel).

Oh, and I think holding up a GPS thingy in the foreground only works if you can read the numbers in the photo Wink

Someone explain to me the purpose of the old turrets on the ground. Were parts used / taken from them? What happened to the hulls they came from?

I believe the German Army converted the M48 into AVLBs before they developed their homeground Leopard 1 based Biber bridgelayer.

Rob,

to the best of my knowledge, we bought the AVLBs from the US, and upgraded our M48A2s with 105mm guns for use in the Heimatschutzbrigaden (reserve units). However, when those became redundant as well, some were converted into Keiler mine-clearing vehicles.

Keiler MCS

wasn't that the nearest city to the fictional "Stalag 13" of "Hogan's Heroes"?

Methinks you're right, there was also a Stalag there in real life (actually an Oflag, an officer's prison camp) which gained some fame due to the fact that Patton's son-in-law was held there- have a look at "Taskforce Baum and the Hammelburg raid" for further details.

Cheers,

Jens,
I really liked that Taskforce Baum site. Very interesting, got anymore links like that?
