20mm shell found
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: 20mm shell found

Whilst looking though the local antique store here in East Texas, I came across a 20mm shell dated 1942.

Had to buy the thing for 15 bucks but it was worth it , the shell has been removed from the brass and its contents emptied, and the primer has been punched or fired.

On the top of the shell is a brass coned cap and when i unscrew it from the actual lead bullet it is hollow inside.

the lettering on the brass cone top is

MK126- . . NC

Heres the exact lettering of the shell.

D.P.
20MM MK III MOD 4
6-42

The Brass itself has no writing on it other than the bottom
don't know what comes first so I'm just going to put them here,

NOEN 76 1942 20M.M-MK.2

Any information would be helpful, cause as it is now I am thinking that it was a 20mm shell used in the Navy on their platform guns.

Definitely a mission for Mr. Ammunition himself, Tony Williams.

Refer to his site and pics and references and if necessary, email him. What he can't answer about this ain't worth knowing. Wink

His email is at bottom of page.

Shadow_Hitman,
I'm at Ft Hood, TX. How far away is Palestine and do you ever get this way? I have 57, 40, 30,and 20mm shell casing's as well as numerous other caliber small round caseings. I have many dating back to the 30's and 40's that I've found, esspecially at Ft Irwin, CA.

Doug, thats a great site and I'm sending it's link to my dad. I'm sure he'll enjoy it immensely!

You might check out Tony's site. If you have something that he doesn't have pictured he might be interested in a picture of it.

Tony Williams site is one of my favorites. I always wanted a collection like that! I have several of his books, and have spoken with him via e-mail several times. He's a great guy.

A cardboard box bursting at the seams holds my entire lifetime collection. This photo shows a few of them (this is before I got tired of picking them all back up every time they got knocked over) Neutral

Lot's of people sell their collections on E-bay. Put "inert" in the search box. A great many interesting items pass thru there.

Some of my small collection, much is stored away dude to lack of display space. However the one item I'm holding I was told was quite rare, (sorry it's out of focus). This is a 1943, 50cal casing msde at Salt Lake Arsenal. It has been shortened and fine wires were sodered into it to create cross-hairs. This was then inserted into the barrel and used for boresighting the barrel to the aiming point of the sights, pretty nifty. I found it out in the Off-road riding course at Ft Irwin. The area was used for anti-aircraft training during WWII. The shells on display are almost all from 1940-50's and I have researched a little something on almost all of them. I found most all the rounds and casings just laying around in various training areas of Ft Stewart, Ft Irwin, Ft Hood, and Camps Grayling and Attabury.
