155MM HEAVY TANK
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Does anyone remember the name/model of the US post WW2 super heavy tank prototype that used a turreted 155mm gun? Not a gun motor carriage, a TANK.

Okay, I'll be nice - its the T30 (its even in the first pic).

Welcome to the board by the way! We're actually normally fairly helpful, but I couldnt resist... Wink

That's Fort Jackson's T30.

Even though it's technically not armor, and not listed on Neil's AFV register, the LARC-5 ( Lighter, Amphibious Resupply Vehicle) which is parked behind the museum, is a really neat vehicle.

I noticed that the track is wider in this last set of photos that Armyjunk submitted. Is that a modification due to the vehicles extra weght? Does the "T" designation stand for Experimental back then, like "X" does now?

Went around taking photos, on Saturday.....

The T 34 was not at its Serio Hall location. Gotta find out where it was relocated to....

It does appear that the Knox T30 has some sort of grousers on the tank.

And yes, back in the old days - before the Army Materiel Command (ie before 1962), when the Ordnance Department was in charge of equipment development & Design; when it was the Ordnance Tank-Automotive Command (OTAC) at Warren MI; and before McNamara started trying to rationalize the US military's designation systems - T stood test (as in test pilot). Sometimes the designation was simply changed to M when it was standardized - such as the T26 becoming the M26 Pershing. Other times not - such as the T6 becoming the M4 Sherman.

The T-series went the same way as the Navy's aircraft designations... So all test vehicles became XM for experimental... Some of the last T series vehicles were redesignated XM....
