WW1 tanks PDF list
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

That would be great. There arent a lot of good pics online from that era... Some from the 1990s, but the ones I have seen didnt look as good quality as the M1921 you posted.

Neil, I have a complete set of the "Mile of Tanks' and most of the rest of Aberdeen, these were done done in the 1980's.....of course all are prints so the quality isn't what it could be......... I guess I could scan a "mile of tanks" topic.............

It looks like your 'Mile of Tanks' is the one I remember from my childhood before the 'Mile' was shortened when they built the new Maryland Ave Gate. I'm not sure when that actually was (I think sometime in the '80s) but everything before the M3 Stuart was put in storage at that point. I vaguely remember it starting with the WWI tanks ( Mk VIII & FT17?)

Pierre-Olivier,
A very interesting file - I have an embarassing number of pictures in it.

I found the pictures of a Hanover "St Chamond" to be most interesting... In fact, I am very certain it is a GPF 194 (I think it was just built by St Chamond rather than based on the chassis) like the one at APG - which was thought to be the only survivor!

I cant figure out how to link to the pics on this page, but compare!:
www.hartziel.de/index....hamond.htm

The suspension in particular is unmistakeable IMO!

No I remember my father driving us down the Mile of Tanks as a kid in the 60s. I didn't start going to Aberdeen on a regular basis again until the late 90s.

I can't recognize the howitzer on it..doesn't look to be the same, maybe the howitzer on the Aberdeen GPF is in recoiled position..? but you seems to be true, Neil.. I just wonder where the GPF 194 from Hannover is now..

According to the folks on the Landships forum, its the 280mm mortar variant:

www.activeboard.com/fo...D=10410055

However, I am not sure I agree. Looks to me like the 280mm barrel should be wider, it didnt have a trunion (or whatever that is called) underneath, and the chassis was shorter as well... I tend to think the barrel has broken, albeit rather cleanly... But either barrel should be longer... Or is it possible the barrel is actually unrelated???

Some more info has been found. Apparently the article that I was relying on from Classic Military Vehicles misidentified the 280mm mortar version (showed the 220mm version instead). It appears this is indeed a Chamond 280 - I guess thats what you call it. You cant call it a GPF 280 since GPF refers to the howitzer...

Further info on this find can be found at

www.hartziel.de/index....nnover.htm

Here's a very rough babelfish translation:

world.altavista.com/ba...nnover.htm

It appears the vehicle is now in the hands of the Dresden Military-Historic Museum.

Pierre-Olivier,
Incidentally, this piece probably better belongs with the surviving French tanks file. The 220mm howitzer version may have been completed in time to take part in WWI, but the 194 and 280 versions were built post-war.

Corrections were done, and I also decided to list the two vehicles like this :

Saint-Chamond 194mm GPF Gun - Aberdeen U.S. Army Ordnance Museum, MD (USA)

Saint-Chamond 280mm Mortar - Militärhistorisches Museum, Dresden (Germany)

Neil, please tell me when you will have received the photos from the Dresden Museum.

Pierre-Olivier
