Hunnicutt Sherman Tank Book
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. It wouldn't happen overnite anyway, Joe. Let's see what kind of interest we get. I might start a separate thread and a list of names that I can add to via the ol' edit function. Wink

Gotta' gauge the interest level first....

It should be a cheaper date for 'em. As I recall, "Firepower" is a much thinner edition than most of the other books (I have fondled a copy, and stupidly didn't buy it when I had the chance Rolling Eyes )

I hear you on that, Dave. I'm probably gonna' spring for "Pershing" myself, now that I've seen the "Sherman" quality reprint (plus, "Pershing" is less expensive by $50 and my copy of "Sherman" is morphing into a birthday gift from the wife, bless her heart...making three of my Hunnicutt's so acquired...).

From the "things I wish I'd known then that I realize how much less I know now" department....here is a scan of the T5, Phase I from my newly acquired "Sherman" and the pic I took of the same tank when I could all crawl over it in '71 (when I had no idea of the significance of the vehicle), plus one that I think was taken by Dontos(?) in the LST building, where it languishes today. Why this historic vehicle is not on display today really puzzles me.

What really has me kicking myself is that I didn't take more pictures of it when I had the chance. (Well, I really didn't know what it was, I was just a trainee at the time) I only have three, and this is the best one, taken with a crummy lil' Instamatic 110 camera.

Ah.....Doug. I believe that photo is Neils. I distinctly Remember the discussion,.....I didn't ID the Photo you had. Seems I totally forgot (or overlooked) about that pilot vehicle being in the LST building. I really don't get in there much.

Oh yeah, I think Doug helped with lightening up the picture during a discussion on the LST Building.

Ooops! Ergo, the question mark behind Don's name. Props and apologies to Neil, who gets the credit. My bad!

Neil, do you have any more views of this baby?

Doug

Due to the close proximity of all the vehicles within the LST building, 'walk around' detailed photos, are quite difficult.

I know that Neil did some attempts by taking shots from the tops of vehicles in front/behind the target vehicle. That was several years ago (03 or 04 I believe?).

Next time I get into the LST I hope to photograph multi angles of all the vehicles.

(Unless someone has that already, and will email them to me... Wink ....hint-hint)

When they move all the Aberdeen vehicles are they going to make arrangements so that joe-public can take all round images? Something along the lines of pull it out of the building, park it somewhere for a short while for it to be photographed then load it on its transporter.

Cool

The plans for moving the Aberdeen collection to Ft Lee are pretty vague right now. I'm pretty sure they don't even have 'when' figured out yet.

For all of Aberdeen's faults most of the vehicles are readily accessable for all around photos. There are some in out of the way storage (some of which i still haven't seen) One of the big fears is that they will have to be crammed together at the new location due to changes in the planned space alloted to the museum.

It was back in '04. Unfortunately I didnt quite walk down the aisle shooting each individual tank, I should have... You've already seen the T5 Phase I picture, here's the rest. Plus I have some good pictures that my friend Kevin took.

A good shot taken by my friend Kevin - I think Doug helped to improve this one as well. FYI, I'm the one in red, standing next to my camera tripod. My friend Carl is leaning over tying his shoe or something... Don is in the green shirt.

It was a good trip, if it was something of a marathon effort.

Another overall interior shot, from the other end of the building - could probably use your help with this one Doug.

Jim, I'm hoping that happens as well. But it depends on how they do the move - keeping in mind the most recent maps I have seen dont show the new museum at Fort Lee until FY 2012. As much as it would be a photographer's paradise, I highly suspect they wont move everything in one day. The real question is will they close the museum down for any amount of time (like Quantico did) while they prepare for the move... If its not closed, there's no reason joe-public couldnt be there photographing while they load the collection up. Of course thats everything that you can already see... I'd hope that the stuff in storage would come through the main part of the post, perhaps be pre-positioned like they do vehicles going through refurb, before they head out. But they could possibly take them out through other gates I suppose... Which would of course just mean we'd have to have some people stationed outside the gates (ie in public areas) ready to take pictures when they come out... Or just maybe Bob or I will get some sort of access during the move... Who knows... Its years away... I know a LOT could change in my life in 5 years!
