Obscure British armor: Need assistance on Charioteer
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Obscure British armor: Need assistance on Charioteer

My esteemed fellow CIAs,

I've already posted this elsewhere, but I figured I'd pick as many brains as I can on this matter:

My next project is a 1/87 Charioteer and I haven't quite decided what livery it will have- I'm not going to do a Finnish one and it's not going to be an Austrian or PLO tank either, so that leaves me with a British or Jordanian one. Unfortunately, literature on the Charioteer seems to be nonexistent, and web sources leave a lot to be desired, most of them feature the same bits of basic info, but nothing more... Anyways, here's what I am looking for:

Option A, British vehicle:

- Which units used them? Did they leave the Isles at all (BAOR, HK, Kenya)?
- T-numbers or license plates, what number ranges?
- SCC-15 or bronze green?

Option B, Jordanian/Arab Legion vehicle:

- What did the markings look like-from the Pathé shots I can make out some of the turret markings, but that's it. Would the markings on the glacis be similar to the Marmon-Herrington's AC shown in the Vanguard on the Mid-East war?
- Was the name in English on one side of the turret and in Arabic on the other side or was it mix-and-match, also what colour was it painted in: Red or black?
- What colour was most likely used? Light stone, desert pink or an unspecified tan/sand?

I'm most grateful for your assistance, thanks in advance for any tidbit you can provide

Jens O.

There was an article in Wheels & Tracks #60 on pages 16-24 by David Fletcher.

Thanks Esa,

I had a murky memory that there was something like that, but couldn't find it in the W&T-Index- I should have that issue and they're unpacked already as well, I'll check rightaway.

Cheers,

Outstanding Esa,

almost everything I needed and right at my fingertips, too- seems like my brain needs a serious reboot.

So, I've decided to do the Jordanian one, any off-chance that somebody has in-action shots or a walkaround of the one at Bovington?

Cheers,

Jens O.

I've got a 1/40(?) scale Charioteer tank packaged by UPC. I'd be interested in any info you dig up.

Gladly Rob,

I can either scan the W&T article for you and email it or I can make photocopies, whichever you'd prefer- just email me your preference at jensomehner"AT"onlinehome.de. I can also email the pics I have off Pathé (Jordanian vehicle), you'll find some nice ones from Latrun in the same thread in the Modern DG over at ML, and there is a walkaround of a Finnish one on Tanxheaven.

Cheers,

Jens O.

Glad to hear that this W & T was an answer to your problems!

I am still dissapointed that you did not select a Finnish livery for your model.

What can I say Esa,

the rest of my Finnish vehicles has the splinter pattern camouflage, and an overall green Charioteer just sticks out too much- I'll do one of the white and blue T28s to make up for it sometime in the future.

Still looking for those Jordanian markings, though, I can't believe that people have apparently every other vehicle in Bovington and always avoided the Charioteer... Sad

Cheers,

Google for pics of the Charioteer. The Israelis have one at their tank museum that was captured from the Jordanians and there are some pics of it out on the interweb. Coincidentally, I was looking for info on the Charioteer yesterday.

Actually,

the Israeli one at Latrun was captured from the PLO in Lebanon and is an ex-Jordanian one, but with a questinable paintjob without markings. The Jordanian Charioteers never saw action against the IDF- and yes, I googled before I made my quest public.

Cheers,

I just found out today Accurate Armour has a conversion in 1/35th scale for a Charioteer.

Very cool tank!
