M36B1 interior pictures........
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: M36B1 interior pictures........

These are interior shots of the M36B1 at 4ID museum, Ft Hood. Serialnumber is 772, which was on the right rear tow lug and the data plate. I also included pictures of the front differential "fill" area. The interior was in remarkably good shape. There were Halon bottles under the rear floor boards and you could see where other bottles had been removed from various other areas. Whether or not this is driven by a soviet diesel, maybe one of you experts can tell. I stuck the camera through one opening and towards the missing belly plate to get "glimps" of the engine area. The top of the breech said the following;

GUN 90mm M31A No 9382
ORD COPRS U.S.A.
WVT Arsenal 1952
2350 LBS. INSP R.Z.C.

There were stamped numbers to the left and right of the cannon, of the inside of the front slope. Left side was 3057 and the right side was 1268.

In his book Faint Praise Charles Bailey suggests that the M36B1 probably would have been a good stop-gap solution for the need for a 90mm gun armed tank...

Yup,

reengined and some Yugo upgrades, some of the gauges are metric, too: km/h-Speedometer, temp in °C- interesting.

Thanks for posting

good point. A 100Km/Hr speedometer is not quite as ridiculous as what I'd first thought.

Incidentally,
I believe there are only three M36B1s in the US? - Fort Knox, Fort Hood (both of which are from Bosnia), and oddly enough a private owner in Easton PA...

How do we know thye are from Bosnia? I would like to be able to tell the museum that, with something to back it up.

The Bosnian vehicles will have Russian engines, or headlight bracket modifications, or a slew of 'field modifications' that were used to keep them running.

They would also have the light green paint with white stenciled 4 digit numbers on the turret.

Neil has a good photo of the LST (building) stored M18 (in the Patton collection), which came from Bosnia. It has its original paint still...

Article from Armor magazine - “Two WWII Tank Destroyers Saved from the Balkan Wars Are Returning to U.S. Museums, Armor, January-February 2000, 15.

You can see the Serbo-Croatian writing on some of the instruments in your pictures.

The M36 at the WWII Victory Museum is an ex Yugoslav vehicle. They returned the engine to it's original configuration.

Don.... Actually the article talks about M36s, not specifically B1s... And the picture is not of a B1, although the text seems to match up... So I'm confused, unless the picture is of an errant M36 not related to the story...

Did Fort Knox get a basic M36 from the former Yugoslavia?
