Ascout - he's an ex-marine!

Hunt...from what I hear, there are no "ex-Marines", only those no longer on active duty. Wink

I had a hunch there was something more to that "Echo4" thing than met the eye...

Yes, while serving I was taught the "generic" radio call-sign protocol(s) for use when a specific call-sign is not designated.

The call-sign is composed of a persons' rank and their last name. The rank is broken down by Enlisted or Officer and further by numbers within the rank structure. The first letter of a persons' last name makes the final part of a call-sign.

So, an enlisted person who is a Corporal (E-4) with a last name beginning with the letter P would have a call-sign of E4P. This is pronounced using the phonetic alphabet.
The letter E is the word Echo in the phonetic alphabet. The number 4 is said as an exaggerated version of the word Four. The letter P is the word Papa.
Hence, E4P is Echo-Four-Papa when said using military radio protocol. To shorten it, I use Echo4Papa.

Hope that provides everyone with their daily dose of trivia. Cool

See you in the virtual skies. Smile

Sincerely,
Craig

Name makes perfect sense broken out like that. I guess mine would be Echo6Hotel - Kind of catchy, may have to remember that one!

I hold no ill will towards marines. Worked with several over the past few years and am sure we'll cross paths again.

This educated guess brought to you by Ascout, who was serving as an "Echo-Four" Radio-Telephone Operator in the Scout Section of an Aerorifle Troop of an Air Cavalry Squardron there at one time in his lil' military time in RVN. (That ACAV cmdr. thing came later) Wink

Welcome Aboard, Craig!
