it was discussed on one of Neil's previous threads, in Re: to Proud American M107...
barrells on the 107's were changed, the barrells are rifled and would wear out and need to be changed routinely (dependent on # of rounds fired, etc.). 175 barrells in pics on ground behind the philipo track...

the proud american barrell mentioned, would be one of many, that would have been used on that specific M107 Proud American.
the barrells are changed and the sleeves removed & replaced with new sleeves. (sleeves are done in factory not in field-- per Bob Marin, an old arty men in our battery).
my father in the 548th, the 548th would routinely change the barrells for the 2/32 (documented in photos are battery A, C). battery A (and C) are composite batteries of 2 175's, 2 8"...
