Post subject: Napier "Deltic" Junker Jumo-based engines & "Nasty" boats

These are weird!

First, "Nasty" boats, or PTF "Nasty" Class Vietnam Era PT Boats were a Norwegian-design used for maritime version SOG, MAROPS under the Naval Advisory Detachment (NAD) of OPLAN 34A subset OPLAN 31. The Navy didn't have anything that would let them ingress/egress N. Vietnamese waters quickly so they bought off-the-shelf from the Norwegian Navy (also evaluated and used by the Brits) the "Nasty Boat", a post WWII PT design:

www.intertrader.net/ptf.htm

www.intertrader.net/pc...wscan6.jpg

..that used a truly strange engine based on the Junkers Jumo engine, a 36 piston, 18 cylinder engine with no cylinder heads, because the pistons oppose each other. Well, you gotta' see it to understand it

www.intertrader.net/im...eltic1.gif

And you gotta' read the manual, at least the first section or two to get a grasp on how this design operates...it's one strange beast. Shocked

www.intertrader.net/chapter1.pdf

www.intertrader.net/chapter2.pdf

You can access the whole manual here:

www.intertrader.net/ptfdeltic.htm

and see lots of pics of the boats in action here:

www.intertrader.net/ptfboats.htm

...and you can get a good idea of the operations these were used on in Richard H. Shultz, Jr. "The Secret War Against Hanoi" ISBN 0-06-093253-8

And if you ever saw Mick Trainor as a consultant on CNN in past years as a "military consultant", a mild-looking gentleman in thick glasses...guess what?...he was a Marine LTC, later LTG, early SOG cmdr. and had been on exchange with the British commandos. In other words, one tough mofo with a lot of experience. He helped establish that MarOp program. Wink

BTW, Napier was an aircraft engine builder that also powered one of my favorite cars, the Brookland racer, the Napier Railton, a 24 liter, aircraft engine powered racer:

If you ever get over here Ascout, I'm a 10 minute drive away from Brooky.
Amazing aviation and auto museum residing on the same site where many Hawker Hurricanes and Wellington bombers were built which, in turn is the same site as the old Brooklands racing circuit (Napiers, Bentleys, etc etc etc).

Amongst their other exhibits (including the Napier, heheh), they have

"Delta Golf" (G-BBDG), one of the test Concordes, as well as;

"R for Robert" the Wellington bomber ditched in Loch Ness during a WWII training run and recovered in 1985. Now being restored.

I did know that, actually, which kind of follows from having no cylinder heads or normal valve gear as we usually think of it. Definitely a strange beast. I'd like to hear one of these in operation. Should be "different". Shocked

Those old deltic locos sure pack a cool hum check out utube for some cool vids on this, funny how things change i can remember being a little annoyed as a kid if a deltic pulled up on my platform, as i was more impressed with a old steamer pulling me to blackpool lol..
