Deteriorating super glue, am I the only one?
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Deteriorating super glue, am I the only one?

Hi Guys
Back in the late eighties and early nineties, I started to buy resin kits. At that time, that was the only way to get a new 1/35 scale armour kit as no injection companies were releasing new kits. Well, almost none. I'm sure there may be some exceptions that fellow modellers will want to mention. However, my overall point still stands and that is, if you wanted a new 1/35 scale armour kit, resin was almost the only option. Anyway, some of those kits I built have now been sitting on the shelf for more than a decade and I've started to notice parts that seem to just drop off. Occasionaly, I dust the shelfs and some damage does occurr as I move kits from one shelf to another untill dusting is complete. Some of this damage occurrs to easily, I mean I just pick up the kit and parts fall off. While dusting I'll even find parts sitting beside their kit that I know I never touched. So, my question is, does this happen to anybody else? Have any of you noticed super deteriorating over time causing parts to fall off your resin kits?
Cheers-

Hi Geoff,

As far as my knowledge goes, the Cyano Acrylat glue (SuperGlue) is dependent on compression for the parts that are glued together with it, the tendency it has when the layer of glue is not compressed enough during the curing process, that it turns into a sorta crystaline layer wich cracks rathers easely after time, actual fact is that the thinner the layer of the glue between the two surfaces the better the bonding.

As long as you have the bits and pieces that may have come off your models you could glue 'm back on, just try to use the minimum amount of SG possible
