VA War Museum Pics for Armyjunk....
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

I visited the VA War Museum yesterday and snapped about 90 or so pictures. "Armyjunk" requested a few pictures of items inside the museum so I'm here to share his request. I apologize now for the quality of some of the pictures, (dark mainly).
I have these pictures of the Holt Tractor pulling a 60 Pounder. After these pictures I will post some of the other items in the museum as well, enjoy.

I'm assuming these are the 57mm French mortars that I'm posting. There were no information boards with these, but a volunteer at the museum told me they used to sit out front by the entrance to the building. Their serial numbers, (I'm assuming thats what they are) were SEM 1593 and 818.
Then there's the M1893 Howitzer. They were doing some painting to a German 88, so this was the best picture I could get of this Arty Piece.
There is also a 6 Pounder for which I am truely sorry for the dark pictures. My little kodak can only do so much.

Hey Armyjunk, I have some more for ya. I figured I'd post a few a night while I'm here at ANCOC, since thats all I really have time for.
This is a German 88 built in 1941 and was being repainted the day I was there. The other piece is a Model 98/09 105mm Howitzer. Hope you can use these as well. I'll also have pictures of that M5 thats in the background and some of the 6 ton tractor with interior shots. I'll try and do those tomorrow.

Thanks Jeff, What I have is a List of World War I artillery in the US and Canada. At this point it has 1400 pieces on the list with about 255 pictures so far. So anytime anyone sees any WWI Artillery (1890 -1918) I can always use a picture. Dick Pope has been working on this for years and I put it on a Access Data Base..

armyjunk2, sounds like a great project!

Here's what I have for that period artillery at the Ordnance Museum:

M1897 75mm field gun
M1897 75mm field gun
M1897A4 75mm field gun - "Standard M1897A4, 75mm gun mounted on an M1897A7 75mm field gun, M2A2 carriage with shield" (Ordnance Museum Guide CD)
M1897A5 75mm field gun
M1900 5" siege howitzer *
M1905 6" Heavy field gun - SN 12
M1906 4.7" (120mm) field gun *
M1912 3" (76mm) field gun
M1912 3" rapid fire seacoast gun (training dummy) - SN 2
M1916A4 75mm field gun
M1917 (originally M1897) 75mm field gun
M1917 75mm field gun - "Converted UK 18 pdr to 75mm" *
M1917 GPF 155mm field gun - French GPF Puteaux
M1917A1 GPF 155mm field howitzer - French M1917 was modified to M1917A1 at Rock Island Arsenal in 1940
M1918 155mm field howitzer
M1918 GPF 155mm field howitzer with inserted 105mm barrel for chemical round testing
M1920M1 155mm field howitzer - Carriage adjusted for 4.7" (120mm) by RIA 1922

Mk III Mod 1 16" (406mm) Seacoast Gun (on Proof Mount) Wink

* Current location / status unknown...

Quantico should have an M1897 75mm field gun with High Angle Carriage, transferred in 1962

Not so much foreign WWI era stuff... Some of its hard to tell, some records just say "120mm mortar," etc...

British Mk I/II? 18-pounder (75mm) field gun "Minnie"
French GPF 194 194mm SPH
French M1897 75mm field gun "Bridget"
German K96nA 77mm field gun "Gertrude"
German Flak 102 8cm anti-aircraft gun - "Captured by the Allies on November 11, 1918 at Liege, Belgium. It was sent to APG for test in 1919. "
Soviet M1902/30 76mm Divisional Cannon
Soviet M1910/30 122mm field howitzer

According to Museum Ordnance November 1992, the museum used to have an M1914 42cm Brummer field howitzer - but it was destroyed... Wink

Fort George Meade used to have a couple of German WWI howitzers, but they were filled with concrete or something like that and were disposed of in some way...

Any chance this could become a web-accessible document?

I'm glad to have been of some help. I'll keep my eye's open from now on. I have more to post from the museum but I'm at a computer lab right now and don't have access to my pictures. It will have to wait till tomorrow night.

thanks again Jeff

Neil, Thanks a good idea, but first I have to ask Dick Pope, he owns the list and it is copywritten, and second I need to learn how to post it. It is a ACCESS data base with another file with 250 or so pictures. I could use pics of the M1918 GPF FH / with 105mm barrel

Here's the picture from the Ordnance Museum Guide CD - its a wierd one...

Here's what the guide says about it:

"This was a 155mm M1918 Schneider howitzer with an 18-foot, 105mm barrel inserted into its bore. Two external guide rods maintain barrel alignmnt. The modification was built for the Chemical Corps to test chemical munitions. The top of the breech has been modified to accept an air line, much like on naval turret guns, to purge the chamber and barrel of any powder or chemical agent residue after firing."

I hope the info was useful as well!

Hello all, I showed you the French Mortars, now here are the American Mortars, (a personal favorite).
I never realized Gatling Guns were all brass?! Is this common or was this a special model?
Neil posted a large field piece but this one "might" just be bigger, haha.
