Mail Call at Ft Knox
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Well the show is just about over. He just finished the segment at the Museum

Don - That was you I saw in working on the rear corner of one of the vehicles?

How come you didn't get any credit for the Ontos? And did he really call it the M40 Ontos?

I was the bow gunner on the Sherman when Gunny was in the turret. I got to burn some .30 cal (blank) ammo. Gunny got in my position, and I got him familiar with the .30 cal.

The Ontos Segment was great. (except when he called it the M40 Shocked )

I'm gonna watch it again.... Mr. Green

A great show for all the volunteers, most get little, if any recognition outside of the Museums Volunteer Organization.

Hopefully It (we) can survive the revisionists...

Cool

Overall the show was pretty good. I think Don should have gotten credit for ramrodding the Ontos project. It was his baby start to finish.

I laughed out loud when the Gunny was walking through the museum and said all of the vehicles were operational.

It was good to see the volunteers getting some credit for all they do and Frank Jardim did a very good job while being interviewed. Very professional.

I wish I could have been there, but I was on a family vacation at the time.

I kinda smiled when it was referred to an M40 as well, but was surprised that he didn't finish telling TV Land that the word Ontos in Greek meant 'The Thing'. Rolling Eyes

Also, what is the Ontos true classification anyway? We all here know that it's not a tank, but is it a Mobile Recoiless Rifle? Tank Killer?

So if we all send him an email do you think we can get him to give Don some belated credit?

Something like
-----
Gunny I enjoyed the show about your visit to Ft Know. I've been following the restoration of the Ontos there on the AFVnews online discussion group for several years. Although it was great seeing the volunteers get so much richly deserved credit I think you inadvertantly neglected to mention Don Moriarity the volunteer who has ramrodded the project over the years. Don has become recognized as an expert on the M-50 Ontos.

Would it be possible for you to Don some recognition for his efforts.

------

Y'all want to try?

Thanks Bob. I'm humbled and a bit speechless.

I don't know if its really necessary, since I do not or have never, sought any sort of recognition for my efforts.

My motivation (or dedication) to the Ontos Restoration has always been for the preservation of a neglected piece of the Patton collection, and Armor History. As for researching its history (and becoming a "recognized expert on the M-50 Ontos"), I just wanted to learn more on the vehicle. Also, in compiling this information, it insures that its history did not fade away with the individuals ( & family members) who served on or with the Ontos.

In my opinion, this is why museums are so important. An institution which preserves artifacts and memories for all to be able to see and experience. Perhaps also to better understand the dedication and sacrifice of those who have gone before us.

Don

And one of these days you will be 'one of those who have gone before us'

Jeff

Rifle, Multiple 106mm Recoilless Rifle, Self-Propelled, M50/M50A1
its classified as a tank destroyer. During its operational history it never fulfilled that particular role, however it did fulfill it secondary role in infantry support.

....Sort of like the current classification of the Stryker MGS.

Thanks Don for your part and love for restoring the Ontos to her former glory. Will it be on display in the coming months at the museum and will it be a part of an operational performance?

I've been around the one at Camp Atterbury but knowing the one you're standing in front of really works is another thing.

I agree with Bob and Neil, even though I dont think we can remedy it Don, you should have received the credit due you for all your efforts, even if you didn't do it to seek recognition you are still the man who did it and at least everyone here at the DG knows and appreciates it.
