New 1/35 scale kit from Tamiya
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: New 1/35 scale kit from Tamiya

Hi Folks!

I have just stopped by Terry's PMMS site to check up on the latest modelling news and found an interesting (to me anyway) Tamiya update.

Kit number 35284 will be a 1/35 scale Renault UE Tractor with trailer, two French Infantrymen and two tank crewmen.

I think it great that Tamiya is doing something that is not German and a subject that has not been done before (as far as I know). Maybe Mr. T has not given up on the 1/35 scale just yet. Smile

A bit more on topic, anyone know what the French used the UE Tractor and trailer for?

Hi Roy;

From what I understand, the Renault UE chenillete was used to tow a 25mm anti-tank gun, much like the British carriers towed guns. However, it was more in a league with the Italian CV35 and Carden-Loyd designs of the early 30's and certainly "over the hill" by the time WW2 started.
It also towed a "tracked" trailer as a supply vehicle.

Wow! I finally have a reason to dust off my old Heller French 25mm AT gun!

And, if you must build it as a captured vehicle in German use, there's quite a few options that way as well. The only thing negative on this release maybe the price. Early prices in Japan indicate $22.00+ for this tiny thing. Shocked I just hope its kept reasonable in N. America otherwise I'll stick to the kits from Mirage.

The III Tank Battalion, 1st Tank Regiment had 17 Renault UEs for training in the UK.

These were brought to the UK by French troops evacuating in 1940.

They also had a few (retaining the French markings in addition to Polish 'PL' plates) for the '1st Reconnaissance Regiment', these appear to have retained their trailers.

There are photos in the first volume of 'Polish Armoured Forces 1939-1945' by Lalak, ISBN 83-911863-9-3.

An interesting alternative.

Mirage did plastic kits and DES resin ones.
The chenillette was to carry supplies for the infantry (not armoured infantry-the Lorraine chenillette was meant for them) and the French refused to arm it, for fear it would be diverted from its primary mission, SUPPLY (and towing the 25mm M34 AT gun too).
