Data plate from ChiCom tank destroyed near Hue '72.
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Here is

DCC Control Panel
7.6 Kg

The manual valve in powercylinder should be rotate to Zd position
before turn on switcher CZ

Stabilizer
Switch On
Before turn the lever in the elevating mechanism to the lower position, wait
1.5~2 minutes after the switcher CZ turned on
Switch Off
Turn the lever in the elevating mechanism to the upper position(The handwheel should be rotataed until the lever turn to the upper position If the lever not in the upper position),then switch off the the switcher CZ

Electric Control Device
Use the switcher SP to turn on or turn off the device. The device should not
be turned on if no need

Fire the weapon
Machinegun trigger is in the handlever on the left corner of controlpanel. Gun trigger is in the handlever on the right corner of controlpanel.

Famo,

Your translation is independenly confirmed, with one suggestion:
Instead of....
"Before turn the lever in the elevating mechanism to the lower position, wait 1.5~2 minutes after the switcher CZ turned on "

recommended....
"Turn on switcher CZ and wait for 1.5-2 minutes, then turn the lever in the elevating mechanism to the lower position."

a small thing that does not change the meaning.

Now, all we need is someone who can identify the vehicle. My guy is forwarding to someone in the military in China who may be able to cast some light on this for us. Perhaps we can pin this down. I'd love to know the vehicle type for sure.

Depends on what's hit, Shawn...if the hull is struck and the engine or drive/suspension is disabled, the fighting compartment can be completely unaffected, yet the tank is abandoned and useless, to all intents and purposes. In a highly fluid situation with an army not equipped for vehicle recovery (such as the NVA during this phase), the vehicle could have been accessed during back-and-forth movement of the two sides. We had a vast collection of captured anti-aircraft and other artillery in the 101st, not all of it damaged, and I don't mean just .51 cal's, either, but big stuff. It's funny what gets left behind and grabbed when things get hot.

I recall seeing a fully functional captured enemy tank demo'ed down south and compared to an M48 for parameters like turret rotation speed and stuff like that...a T54/55 or whathaveyou, in early '72. Tanks don't always go up in a spectacular ball of flame and leave charred black hulks.

yes, i realize that doug, i am going on the terms given in the account, destroyed versus disabled or abandoned... tell me it was destroyed by a TOW's and you had a bbq. it aint dead til i see smoke/fireball, i am going to make sure it is "confirmed". i dont see any of those boys, having those hellova turkey shoots and just letting anything go even remotely "disabled"... no sir, if it was destroyed, that data plate would be fubar.

i think it is a way cool souvenir! i think it came from an abandoned piece of Chicom/NVA equipment. the souvenirs and trophies to have been picked up from NVA discards would make nice for the "war room".

could the data plate come from an anti-aircraft gun or something?
as you know, there is much info given on the TOW, the 1972 offensive, pics, vids, accounts, kills/scores, AAR's... many many things were killed

Shawn,

Given the last bit:

"Machinegun trigger is in the handlever on the left corner of controlpanel. Gun trigger is in the handlever on the right corner of controlpanel."

This sounds like "Main gun, coax MG" instructions to me, vs. any type of AA or other arty piece.

Final concensus on this item from Chinese former military sources consulted through business contacts is T-59. That would fit the place and period, happily.

Why do you say 'Happily' If it didn't fit the time and place we could get a much better discussion going. The esily explained things aren't where the fun is Wink

Just think another possible perennial discussion to add to the

1) Green Tigers in North Africa
2) Shatter Gap
3) Sabot rounds for American 57mm
4) Pink Panthers in Vietnam

group

What was I thinking?! Imagine the possibilities if only we were to fabricate a story built around a data plate from a Panzer V ostensibly destroyed in the Ruông Ruông Valley by a bazooka in, oh...say about '53 or '61! Opportunity squandered....

We don't fabricate (let the politicians do that) we 'pass on reports from normally reliable sources who relayed a story from a frien who had an uncle who ...' Confused Shocked
