Talk about a parking job!

My pictures of the Serial and Registration numbers didn't focus real well so I'll just type them in

Serial is 3031A off the engine deck. The Tow lug was very feint, I think it was heavy paint.
Registration is iffy I got JJ054 but the 54 is is somewhat obscurred by paint and I think there should be more digits.

Hey Bob, what about this:

I have some registrations that bracket this tank:

JJ0515 - 3022A
JJ054_ - 3031A
JJ051X - 3048A

Let's say that registrations went 0 - 9 then A - Z. That would give:

JJ0515 - 3022A
516 - 3023
517 - 3024
518 - 3025
519 - 3026
51A - 3027
51B - 3028
51C - 3029
51D - 3030
51E - 3031
51F - 3032
51G - 3033
51H - 3034
51I - 3035
51J - 3036
51K - 3037
51L - 3038
51M - 3039
51N - 3040
51O - 3041
51P - 3042
51Q - 3043
51R - 3044
51S - 3045
51T - 3046
51U - 3047
51V - 3048
51W - 3049
51X - 3050

No match, eh, but I'll bet that I and O are not used to avoid confusion with 1 and 0 (as per standard drawing practice), so how 'bout:

JJ0515 - 3022A
516 - 3023
517 - 3024
518 - 3025
519 - 3026
51A - 3027
51B - 3028
51C - 3029
51D - 3030
51E - 3031
51F - 3032
51G - 3033
51H - 3034

51J - 3035
51K - 3036
51L - 3037
51M - 3038
51N - 3039

51P - 3040
51Q - 3041
51R - 3042
51S - 3043
51T - 3044
51U - 3045
51V - 3046
51W - 3047
51X - 3048

which does match.

This brings us back to 3031A. Could the R/N be JJ051E?

Wish I could have gotten an RN off the Waynesburg M60 (3036A) it would have been a good check on your assumption. I'll check the pictures of Meyersdale I have when I get home tonight.

Do we have a 'master' list of M60 Serial numbers that we are keeping?

I've just started an excel spreadsheet with SN/RN and a little other information but would gladly modify my structure if someone has something started.

Hi Bob, Kurt,
Very nice thesis Kurt, I hate to rain on your parade though. First problem with this is you are applying the sequence to Anniston rebuilds. From what I can tell they many retained their original RN's that were issued when they were made as A1's. Examples of ANAD,MZAD and Detroit A3's below,

M60A3 969 JJ03UK Praire Du Chein WI
M60A3 1780A JJ03YM Fort Irwin CA
M60A3 1807 JJ0672 Barstow CA
M60A3 2394A JJ0467 Fort Knox KY
M60A3 2533A JJ04LS Vine Grove KY
M60A3 2949A JJ04Z0 Fort McCoy WI
M60A3 3382A JJ01GH Montfort WI
M60A3 3386A JJ00DS Viroqua WI
M60A3 3391A JJ021M LaValle WI
M60A3 3407A JJ01MQ Lyndon Station WI
M60A3 3688A 09A06670 Camp Douglas WI
M60A3 3712A 9B7810 Jamestown TN
M60A3 3728A 09A94568 Sparta WI
M60A3 3837A 09A09071 Tuscumbia AL
M60A3 3926A 9B5578 Athens TN
M60A3 4039M JJ010R Newport News VA
M60A3 4117M JJ01KW Kendall WI
M60A3 4118M JJ00XF Sparta WI
M60A3 4121M JJ01ZZ New Lisbon WI
M60A3 6378 09A11972 Fort Hood TX
M60A3 6903 JJ00DW Boscobel WI
M60A3 8111 JJ01FK Sikeston MO

Examples of M60A1's,

M60A1 3078 09B7257 Fort Knox KY
M60A1 6241 09A05172 Fort Knox KY
M60A1 6346 09A09872 Fort Knox KY
M60A1 8679 JJ00XV Fort Knox KY
M60A1 8692 JJ01JR Fort Knox KY
M60A1 8797 JJ01UG Fort Knox KY
M60A1 8823 JJ01V4 Fort Hood TX
M60A1 9360 JJ010A Portola Valley CA

I originally thought that the 09B---- and 09A---- were M60A0 and early GEN 2 hulled A1's but I found an A3 rebuild GEN 2 with a JJ---- number. So maybe they re registered some and didn't other's. Also there are some A3 rebuilds with with 8 digit 09A------ numbers with GEN 2 and 3 hulls. From what I can tell when the JJ---- numbers started they were all Gen 3 and later hulls and new M60A3's. M60A2's and AVLB's made from them that I track all start with JK----. I'm just guessing but I believe in the mid to late 60's the Army changed to a new registration system which is the JJ---- numbers we see. The first for tank, the second the type. I believe that's why "J" was for A1 and "K" was for A2. You would figure an A3 would be "L" but maybe because they originally were just modified A1's they didn't change the designator. M1's from what I recall had JL, JM and JZ from what I remember. This is all serious speculation, Now I wish I had recorded more registration numbers but since I never could make and sense of them I stuck to Serial Numbers.
