Armored Red Legs
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hi Folks!

Found these two photos over at the US Army web site. It's been some time sense they had some armored vehicle pictures.

When I was at Anniston Army Depot a guy there told me they built those resupply vehicles from old M108 105mm Howitzers.

Hi Mark! Hi Folks!

- MarkHolloway
When I was at Anniston Army Depot a guy there told me they built those resupply vehicles from old M108 105mm Howitzers.

A few may have been, but my guess is most of M998s used either surplus M109s or where new builds.

Back when the M108/M109s where developed (sometime about the mid to late 1950s) the division artillery had three battalions of 105mm howitzers and one battalion of 155s.

Shortly after early testings started, the decision was made to upgrade the division artillery to 155s sense both vehicles types cost almost the same amount. If I remember right, the number of artillery battalions were also reduced from four to three. Only a hand full of M108s where ever completed.

My 2 cents on some very very old history,
Sgt, Scouts Out!

AFAIK, all FAASVs were/are new builds on a modified M109 chassis.

It's VERY possible the guy at Anniston was full of bull! Neutral

Ex 'wind dummy' red leg here--couldn't resist showing a sheridan going 120 m.p.h.
