CAMP SHELBY MS, TANKS AND STUFF
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

AJ2

Back in 04 & 05, I spent many months at Shelby.

I was able to get many shots of the static displays and some of the interior. Real nice Museum!! Especially when you understand it is run on a 'show-string' budget.

I was informed that the M8 Armored Car is Operationally Restored, but is on interior display due to lack of funds to run it, and upkeep.

The light tank has quite a unique history, and is quite a rarity. It was discovered in a wooded area, abandoned. It was found on land that had been an Army munitions depot. When the former owners reaquired the land, it was discovered. I believe it was found in 1978 (or so). The marking on the semi-restored vehicle are the actual markings that were on the vehicle when it was discovered.

The vehicle had no engine, when discovered, (and there is none in the hull) but behind the tank is a crated radial engine, that is part of the display. It is the same type, that was originally in this type of vehicle. The engine is in its original manufacturer crate, having never been operated. It is tagged 1941 or 42 (if I remember correctly).

There is quite a story behind this tank. It is quite a gem.

The staff was very kind in allowing me considerable access on my visits there.

Regards
Don

Yep, many thanks Armyjunk2! Only thing I could possibly ask for would be serial numbers! But you know what they say about the gift horse, etc....

That Sherman should be an M42 flamethrower model - any more pics of it? And if you have any really high-res pics of the Abrams it might be possible to get the SN off the skirts...
