I received a curious email today./. (Tiger I tank related)
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: I received a curious email today./. (Tiger I tank related)

Attached to this mail there was a document in which a person from the company "Tecnobaltic limited / Germany" explained that " (they) intend the construction and the manufacturing of the Tigerpanzer of 1942-1945, in the original size and with more modernly technique."
They are apparently looking for a customer who would buy the Tiger they will produce..

Here is the document, if someone is interested to see what it's about :

http://the.shadock.free.fr/TigerGrafik.doc

I wonder how serious it is??

Not very, I think.

It would have to be a multi-million Euro operation and I doubt they get any serious investors with the sort of machinetranslation pidgeon English brochure Smile

As for scanning an original Tiger I from Sinsheim or Munster, I think they will have a hard time doing that as neither museum posesses a Tiger I, to my knowledge. What they had were vehicles on loan from either APG or Saumur, both of which have been returned, AFAIK.

And why would anyone want to throw money at a replica with engine and transmission that does not even come close to the original?

I think it is a case of either bogus or overenthusiasm Smile

The company doesn't exist either - or they have neglected to register it..

Cool

P-O,

I think the little project I involved you in represented a better return on investment with considerably less risk. Run, don't walk, away from this opportunity-of-a-lifetime.... Laughing

Either that or donate any funds you were thinking of using to the Kibbey Restoration Fund... his body needs an extensive overhaul Wink

Right, it didn't seems to be serious enough for me too, and it's maybe a too risked investment.. let's continue to transform British FV 432 APCs into StuGs and Jagdpanthers and T-55s into Tigers..

Let's hope Kevin Wheatcroft's "Big Cat" project gets launched, in that event there will be "true" replicas of Tiger I's.

I've been toying with the replica idea myself, building Panthers out of commercial steel and epoxy. Steel for the lower hull, epoxy for the upper hull and turret (upper hull and turret supported by steel frame). Use of modern automotive components and torsion bars that match original dimensions as close as possible (a field yet to be examined). Gun breach made to accept a modified saluting gun firing 75mm saluting ammo. It wouldn't come cheap but at least cheaper than a full metal one.

Replicas are the only time you are ever going to see some AFVs.

More than a few years ago I made a replica of a Home Guard armoured car which was easy as it used an available Humber car chassis and steel plate/wooden plank armour.. the only complication was the engine which was way too expensive to assemble from spare parts so a Ford escort engine was used instead. It looked okay provided you didn't open the bonnet.

These days I am having a go at a skeleton tank.. I already have some components for the frame and I'll gradually get it done, hopefully, over the next few years.

In the future? Well I have some parts from a Carden-Lloyd one man tank... sprocket, track links & a couple of roadwheels so maybe I'll give it a go sometime in the future.

I always thought that the way to go with the smaller replicas is to co-opt a few others and take turn to produce parts ie one person produces the enough catwalks for everyone, another enough engine mounts etc etc and
then with some parts exchanging they all end up with a replica.

Cool

I'll admit I would like to see some Replicas with a semblance of the proper suspension (The overlapping roadwheels) Maybe something could be done by putting dummies between the 'working' roadwheels of a T55 conversion. or start from teh ground up. I'm not even sure I would mind if they didn't use torsion bars. If it was more costeffective to use springs, pneimatic, or some combination as long as the outside appearance didn't give it away. After all can you tell if a T-34 or Cromwell uses springs or torson bars when you look at it? I wouldn't mind if it used a modern engine and transmission under the surface. It would be nice if it could get something near the proper exhaust tone. I've got some pictures stashed away of some Replica german '8 RAD' armoured cars. The big complaint I had was that they were done at 3/4 scale or smething like that. They used front ends from M151s for the suspension. If I remember correctly all axles steered (one reason they used front ends on all positions)

I think you can get an engine to sound how you want it too with some creative exhaust tampering using a drill or hammer... I suspect the hot-rodders would know more about this that us old codgers...
