IR Headlamps on Humvee
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Guess this could be an armored Humvee so it's on topic. Wink When did they start using IR again? Is this a field mod or what? I saw several of these. (IR lamps are next to 'tie downs')

Mark,

IR headlights are mounted on HMMWVs a lot here in Iraq - it's very common (along with white-light spotlights and all manner of electronic gizmos).

Hi Mark! Hi Folks!

Wild! If you didn't know they were there, few people would notice.

Any change you can check the dash board for the control switch?
I would guess that if there is a togo switch on the dash board, it's possible a field mod. If it is wired into the standard light controller, then maybe it's a MWO.

Another question would be 'what type of mileage do those IR Hummers have on them. Low could possible mean depot rebuild while very high mileage might be field mod.

Very interesting!

I wonder if they have other purposes?

Hi Bob (F15)! Hi Folks!

I wonder if they have other purposes?

I would guess their ONLY purpose is so the driver can drive much faster at night with the service drive headlights turned off. If the driver is wearing just about any type of thermal vision devise, those IRs will look just normal headlights to him. As far as it has been reported so far, the bad guys are not using a lot of night vision equipment and they would not be able to pick up a fast moving vehicle running with IR headlights.

My 2 cents on IR headlights. Confused

These IR lights are not that uncommon on Hummers, especially in that location. Alot of ours in Korea had them as well as here at Ft Hood. The light switch can be either separate from the regular light switch, or some have them integrated in to the switch.

Roy,

I'll check the switches Monday. They sure are a good fit where they have them!
