Bumper Markings on a M1
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Bumper Markings on a M1

Hi Folks!

Found this photo over at the Army.mil web site.

www.army.mil/-images/2...7/09/6277/

Correct me if I am wrong, but the way I am reading that bumper marking is:

2-I-2-9 IN
2 = 2nd Division
I = Infantry Division, I am thinking this is an "I" and not a "1", because if it is a "1" then that bumper marking makes no sense at all.
2 = 2nd Battalion
9 = 9th Regt.
IN = Infantry
2nd Infantry Division, 2nd Bn, 9th Infantry Regt.

Possible another example of an infantry unit with tanks.
Don't asked what the caption said the unit was!

You're right, Roy. Here's their web site: www-2id.korea.army.mil.../2%2D9inf/

I think the second "1" is for 1st Brigade...

But yes, I think you do have evidence there for a combined arms battalion...

Hi Neil! Hi Folks!

I think the second "1" is for 1st Brigade...
Neil

That would add up, that is the 1st Brigade Heavy Combat Team over there.

Sense when did the Army start listing the Brigade as part of a sub-unit's bumper marking. Battalions are not fixed within any given brigade sense they are detached and attached on a mission by mission basis?

Odd, very odd. Neutral

With the new modular brigades, the Army has made the brigade the "new" base for its units instead of the division. All our training has always been brigade based so it makes sense.

It does harken back to the days of the combined arms task forces that 1st Cav had to use. 1st and 2nd Bdes had permanently cross attached battalions in the late 80s.
