Now...Some M47s. Variant designations?
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Now...Some M47s. Variant designations?

I am going to send this in two emails. The first contains attachments showing an M47 monument on display at Camp Dodge, Iowa. Again, I am confused by this vehicle, but because of the data plate, assume that it served in a non-U.S. force, so therefore, some aspects that do not conform with a "spec" U.S. M47.

Can anyone identify specifically what variant, if any, that this M47 is?

Thank you!

Many of the M47s that are on diisplay in the U.S. have similar plates. They were rebuilt in Italy. I believe the story is that they were originally provided under MAP (Military Assistance program) and so when ne olnger needed had to be returned to U.S. custody. They were brought back and used as range targets, etc. Some were then pulled fromn that pool to become static diplays.

Many serving there for quite some time...you can see more examples, including variants of this data plate over at the excellent Ferreamole website of Pierantonio Farina here (and through links contained therein):

Some of G. Fassari's pics in Sicilia are really nice...I have more of his, but as they are not mine, I hesitate to post them...

Thank you Doug...Those are some great links. Yes, indeed, it looks as though Camp Dodge's M47 is an Italian return with little doubt!

John, did you happen to get the serial number off the tow lug?

Neil,
I am embarrassed to say, that, having shot 88 photos of this tank, I do not have a single one of the tow points or serial number!

I will have to reshoot this tank, as I wasn't too happy with the blinding sun that was hitting it on the day I shot those photos. It will probably be later this fall when I get back down to Des Moines. I will be sure to get the serial number ("if it is a job worth doing, I will probably have to do it three times to get it right.")

John
